Afghanistan Players Involved In Altercation At Restaurant Before England Match

Things are just not falling in for place at the moment for Afghanistan in the ongoing World Cup. And the players are struggling to keep their composure not only on the field but also off it.  Police had to be called after some members of the Afghanistan squad were involved in an altercation at a Manchester restaurant on Monday.

The incident took place the night before Afghanistan’s World Cup match against England at Manchester’s Old Trafford. The incident took place at Manchester’s Akbar’s restaurant. As per reports in The Sun,  the players confronted a member of the public after taking exception to him filming them in the Indian eatery. But before things could get out of hands, Police intervened.  The Police, however, did not arrest anyone.

Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib, speaking to reporters after the match against England, spoke on the incident. However, he played down the incident by saying he had no fresh information to offer on the alleged altercation.

“No, I haven’t, so you can ask my security officer. I didn’t know anything about him, about them,” he said. “It’s not a big issue for the team, for me.”

Earlier Tuesday, a statement issued by Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers attended Akbar’s restaurant shortly after 11:15 pm local time (2215 GMT) on Monday.

“Shortly after 11.15 pm on Monday 17 June 2019, police were called to reports of an altercation at a premises on Liverpool Road in Manchester,” the statement said.

“Officers attended the scene. No one was injured and no arrests have been made. Enquiries are ongoing,” it added.

Afghanistan, meanwhile, had another disastrous day on the field as England battered them by 150 runs. The hosts rode on their skipper Eoin Morgan‘s career-best 148 to pile up 397 for 6. In reply, Afghanistan finished on 247 for 8 their highest total in the World Cup. With five losses in as many games now, Afghanistan are very much out of the race for a semifinal spot.
