After Wicketkeeping Gloves, ICC To Ban MS Dhoni's Helicopter Shot

The International Cricket Council (ICC) seems to be obsessed with India and especially MS Dhoni. It does not matter what India does, it rarely finds itself on the same page with ICC. Time and again, the ICC have taken many steps to show that they just don’t mind in bending the rules a bit for India. In their latest step, the ICC has denied MS Dhoni the permission to wear the wicketkeeping gloves with the symbol of Army insignia.

Dhoni had sported the Army insignia on his wicket-keeping gloves during India’s World Cup opener against South Africa. ‘Balidaan’- the regimental dagger insignia of the PARA Special Forces was embossed on his green wicket-keeping gloves.

MS Dhoni, who has been conferred an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment in 2011, had undergone training under the Para Brigade in 2015. The legendary captain had done five jumps from the parachute. But while the entire nation praised him for his gesture, the ICC swiftly acted to kill the joy.

The governing body of the game has asked Dhoni not to wear those gloves. What is even more baffling is that Dhoni was instructed to change the gloves despite him not breaking any rule whatsoever. The ICC regulations say, “The ICC equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match.” The insignia is neither political nor religious but the governing body of the game was not fine with it for reasons only known to it.

And as if banning the insignia was not enough, the apex body has also asked Dhoni not to play Helicopter shot. Top officials from the ICC think that since the players should not promote anything on the field, Dhoni should stop promoting helicopter. The ICC have a partnership with Airlines company Fly Emirates and they think that a player of Dhoni’s status can hurt their business by promoting helicopters.

The BCCI officials have said that they would back Dhoni to the hilt but would back out at the last moment like they always do. Team India players have not made any comment on it but they are likely to express their disappointment to the BCCI. After all, the whole team and the nation wants Dhoni to hit that helicopter shot and bring home another World Cup. The bowlers, nonetheless, are delighted that their yorkers will not be deposited out of the park by Dhoni.
