Australia opening batsman David Warner has scripted history in international cricket as he became the quickest Australian cricketer to reach 5000 runs in one-day internationals. The dashing left-handed batsman accomplished the feat during the first ODI match of the three-game series against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today.
Warner pulled off a sensational four off Jasprit Bumrah and in the process, he became the special one in Australian cricket history. He reached the milestone in 115th ODI innings. With that feat, he also edged past former cricketer Dean Jones, who reached the milestone only in his 128th innings.
David Warner surpasses his former Australian teammates
Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden took 133 innings to score 5,000 ODI runs whereas Michael Bevan took and Ricky Ponting took 135 and 137 innings to register the feat. Overall, Warner became the fourth-fastest to achieve the feat after South Africa’s Hashim Amla (101 innings), and joint-second Viv Richards and Virat Kohli (114 innings).
It should be noted that David Warner achieved the feat just a few balls after he survived a scare wherein he called for a review after India’s appeal. But the review turned in favour of the Aussies as David Warner survived.
In reply to India’s target of 256, Australia got off to a terrific start as the openers David Warner and Aaron Finch scored crunch fifties apiece. With ten wickets in hand and plenty of overs to bat, they appear to be the clear-cut favourites to take the first lead in the ODI series.
