ENG vs IND 2018, First Test: Twitter Reacts As England Take Quick Wickets To Leave Test Finely Poised

With England taking 5 wickets, the first Test of the series is set for a thrilling finish. India finished day three on 110 for 5 in pursuit of 194.

Chasing 194, India were off to a shaky start. The visitors lost both their openers – Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan – with just 22 runs on the board. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli then stopped the rot for a while.

But just when it looked they had their eyes set, Ben Stokes sent back Rahul to reduce India to 46 for 3. Ajinkya Rahane and R Ashwin also failed to contribute much with the bat as India found themselves 5 down for just 78. Kohli and Dinesh Karthik then stitched together an unbeaten stand to help India end the day without suffering any further setback.

Earlier in the day, Ishant Sharma ran through the English lineup to put India on top. The pacer picked up 5 for 51 as India bowled out the hosts for just 180.

Ravichandran Ashwin provided India the perfect start by dismissing Keaton Jennings and Joe Root cheaply. Root and Jennings started the proceedings on day three with the scoreboard reading 9 for 1. On the last ball of the previous day, Ashwin had dismissed Alastair Cook. And the off-spinner did not take much time in leaving his mark again.

Root and Jennings could add only 9 to the overnight score before Ashwin struck. The off-spinner bowled a classic off-spin to force Jennings edge one to the slip where KL Rahul took a sharp catch. Root and Dawid Malan then calmed down the nerves for a while before Ashwin dealt a huge blow to the hosts by dismissing their skipper for just 14. The right-handed batsman had played a short delivery behind the wicket where Rahul pulled off a sensational reflex catch to leave England reeling at 39 for 3.

Malan was then joined in by first-innings half-centurion Jonny Bairstow. The duo took the hosts past the 50-run mark. However, just when it looked they would bat England to a good position, Ishant Sharma sent back Malan for 20. Malan rarely looked confident during the knock before edging one to Ajinkya Rahane at gully.

And even before England could recover from those setbacks, they lost Bairstow with just 85 runs on the board. The keeper-batsman edged an Ishant delivery to the slip where Shikhar Dhawan managed to hold on to a sharp catch. A couple of balls later, Ishant dismissed Ben Stokes to put India firmly in command of the proceedings as England left for lunch on 86 for 6.

Soon after lunch, Ishant sent back Buttler to leave England reeling at 87 for 7.

Adil Rashid and Sam Curran then frustrated the visitors by adding 48 runs for the eighth wicket. Umesh Yadav broke the stand by dismissing Rashid. Curran, on the other hand, went on to score his maiden Test fifty and forged useful stand Stuart Broad to help England post a competitive 180.
