ENG vs IND 2018, First Test: Twitter Reacts As England Take Quick Wickets To Leave Test Finely Poised
Updated - 10 Jan 2019, 01:31 AM
With England taking 5 wickets, the first Test of the series is set for a thrilling finish. India finished day three on 110 for 5 in pursuit of 194.
Chasing 194, India were off to a shaky start. The visitors lost both their openers – Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan – with just 22 runs on the board. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli then stopped the rot for a while.
But just when it looked they had their eyes set, Ben Stokes sent back Rahul to reduce India to 46 for 3. Ajinkya Rahane and R Ashwin also failed to contribute much with the bat as India found themselves 5 down for just 78. Kohli and Dinesh Karthik then stitched together an unbeaten stand to help India end the day without suffering any further setback.
Earlier in the day, Ishant Sharma ran through the English lineup to put India on top. The pacer picked up 5 for 51 as India bowled out the hosts for just 180.

Ravichandran Ashwin provided India the perfect start by dismissing Keaton Jennings and Joe Root cheaply. Root and Jennings started the proceedings on day three with the scoreboard reading 9 for 1. On the last ball of the previous day, Ashwin had dismissed Alastair Cook. And the off-spinner did not take much time in leaving his mark again.
Root and Jennings could add only 9 to the overnight score before Ashwin struck. The off-spinner bowled a classic off-spin to force Jennings edge one to the slip where KL Rahul took a sharp catch. Root and Dawid Malan then calmed down the nerves for a while before Ashwin dealt a huge blow to the hosts by dismissing their skipper for just 14. The right-handed batsman had played a short delivery behind the wicket where Rahul pulled off a sensational reflex catch to leave England reeling at 39 for 3.
Malan was then joined in by first-innings half-centurion Jonny Bairstow. The duo took the hosts past the 50-run mark. However, just when it looked they would bat England to a good position, Ishant Sharma sent back Malan for 20. Malan rarely looked confident during the knock before edging one to Ajinkya Rahane at gully.
???
What a fine spell from @ImIshant.
In 40 balls he has taken three priced wickets of Malan, Bairstow and Stokes.#ENGvIND pic.twitter.com/dSE8tehoWg

And even before England could recover from those setbacks, they lost Bairstow with just 85 runs on the board. The keeper-batsman edged an Ishant delivery to the slip where Shikhar Dhawan managed to hold on to a sharp catch. A couple of balls later, Ishant dismissed Ben Stokes to put India firmly in command of the proceedings as England left for lunch on 86 for 6.
Soon after lunch, Ishant sent back Buttler to leave England reeling at 87 for 7.
Adil Rashid and Sam Curran then frustrated the visitors by adding 48 runs for the eighth wicket. Umesh Yadav broke the stand by dismissing Rashid. Curran, on the other hand, went on to score his maiden Test fifty and forged useful stand Stuart Broad to help England post a competitive 180.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the day’s play:
What a great Test this is turning out to be, low on runs but demanding high skill and mental toughness from players from both sides!

The problem with having a superstar in the team is that everyone becomes super complacent. Cricket is a team sport & the Indian batsmen barring Kohli are showing no fight. Get Kohli & you win. #ENGvIND

Don't score a single run… but for God's sake just stand your ground. Occupy the crease. Kohli will take care of the rest. Don't let his heroic efforts go in vain! #ENGvsIND

Three guys out edging to the keeper. I'm sorry. Ravi Shastri has failed. He has not managed to get these fellows to flash and FLASH HARD

Virat Kohli should ask all his batting partners to just stay at the crease and leave the run scoring to him like he does with Ishant and Umesh. #ENGvIND

Can't you drop Dhawan at least once? How much he did for you
— Siddhartha Vaidyanathan (@sidvee) August 3, 2018
Village batting, I'll be surprised if he last more than two tests. Just can't be backing people for their potential vs Lakmals and Pereras.

Dhawan dropped two catches that cost us many runs ad score shit in two innings…. should be dropped #INDvENG

More than lack of runs, Malan will lose confidence of selectors for muffing catches in a low scoring match

#Ishant Sharma hogging all the limelight:
Oh lambheeeeeeee…top spell @ImIshant wish you many more 5 wickets hauls… today as a senior bowler responded well when it was needed the most.. sabash tere.. India will be happy chasing 194.. Go well boys @BCCI #EngvInd 1st test
— Harbhajan Turbanator (@harbhajan_singh) August 3, 2018
5-wicket haul superb effort by Ishant. Swung match in India's favour though England have batted stubbornly to get close to 200 lead as yet
— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) August 3, 2018
Bhajji put the reverse commentator’s curse in operation today. He said (with some reason) that Ishant Sharma had somewhat underperformed in Test cricket and Ishant answered him with a blistering and possibly match winning spell!
— Ramachandra Guha (@Ram_Guha) August 3, 2018
No pace bowler in the world has picked more wickets away from home against SAF, ENG, NZ and AUS since Jan. 2014 than Ishant Sharma. Those 48 wickets have come at an average of around 29- seventh best in the world and the best for a sub-continent pacer. @KumarSanga2 #ENGvIND
— Soham Sarkhel (@Soham_Sarkhel) August 3, 2018
Ishant Sharma now has 243 Test wickets! He has just gone ahead of BS Chandrashekar's tally of 242 wickets.
Now only six Indian bowlers are ahead of him in Test cricket!#ENGvIND#INDvsENG— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) August 3, 2018
#Dhawan finally puts his fielding woes behind:

Dhawan holds on, doesn't ask umpire to refer, passes Go, collects 200.#EngvInd
