Former India opener Gautam Gambhir played under as many as five captains during his illustrious international career. The left-handed batsman made his debut under the legendary Sourav Ganguly. Later, he went on to play under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, MS Dhoni as well as Virat Kohli.

As far as Gautam Gambhir is concerned, he was one of India’s biggest match-winners during his playing days. The southpaw will always be remembered for his match-winning knocks in India’s victorious campaign at the ICC World T20 in 2007 and the 2011 World Cup.

He represented India in 58 Tests, 147 ODIs and 37 T20Is. Gautam Gambhir scored  over 10,000 international runs. In 2009, he was also named ICC Test player of the year. The legendary batsman played under some of India’s most successful captains during his illustrious career.

And in a recent interview, he picked legendary Indian spinner Anil Kumble as the best captain. Gautam Gambhir said that Anil Kumble would have broken several records had he led India in more number of games. Kumble took charge of the team towards the fag end of his career.

“Yes MS Dhoni in records point of view, right up there but yes, for me the best captain I’ve played under is Anil Kumble,” said Gautam Gambhir in Star Sports show Cricket Connected.

“Sourav (Ganguly) has done really well. One captain that I would have definitely wanted to captain India for a long time is Anil Kumble. I played six Test matches under him probably; he didn’t captain India for that long. Had he captained India for a long time, he would have broken a lot of records,” he added.

Kumble replaced Rahul Dravud as Test captain in the 17th year of his international career. The ex-leg-spinner, who is India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Tests and ODIs, led the country in 14 Test matches before announcing his retirement mid-way through Australia’s tour of India in 2008. Under him, India won three Tests, drew five and lost six.
