Team India is all set to play England in a 5 match Test series starting from 1st August. India has played some wonderful cricket in the longest format of the game in the recent past. Hence they are quite ahead in the Latest ICC Test Rankings. They are the No 1 side, leading second-placed South Africa by 19 points. The Proteas lost the Test series to Sri Lanka by a 0-2 margin which brought them down to just 106 points.
Meanwhile, India is currently on 125 points. They have been the most dominant Test side for quite a long time now. Now let us look at a calculation which might blow your mind. Even if England inflicts a 5-0 whitewash on the visitors, India will still remain the No 1 side in the world. If the series ends like that, India will go down to 112 points but will still occupy the No 1 spot.
The current standings and the bearing on the series
England is currently at the 5th position with 97 points. A 5-0 series victory will help them jump to the 2nd position with 107 points. Hence India is all set to maintain their numero uno status for quite a long time now. They have played some terrific cricket and it looks highly unlikely that they will get whitewashed in the Test series.

India has a chance of stamping their authority as the No 1 team in the world. However, their points tally is so high even a 5-0 series victory will get them up by only 4 points. If the series ends 0-0, India would be standing on 120 points. A 3-2 series victory for India will keep them in the No 1 position. However, they will lose a couple of points.
A 3-2 series victory in favour of the hosts will reduce India’s points by 7. England will gain 6 points to be at the 4th position with 103 points. In the case of a 4-1 win in England’s favour, India will go down by 10 points to 115. England will occupy the 4th spot with 105 points. England will lose 4 points if they succumb to a 5-0 whitewash at the hands of India.
