The final of this year’s Indian Premier League was all about just one man – Shane Watson. The opening batsman blew away Sunrisers Hyderabad with his extraordinary batting in the title-decider. For most part of the game, the Super Kings remained on top and in the end registered a comfortable 8-wicket win to life the title.

That they did not suffer too many hiccups during their chase was only because of Watson. The hard-hitting Australian started his innings in a manner which was very unlikely of him. His initial struggle would have surely convinced many that it was not his night. He took 11 balls to get off the mark.

However, it was not the precursor of the things that were to follow. The opener took his time to settle down, but once he had his eyes set, it was absolute carnage. He ruthlessly targeted Siddarth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma, who went for 95 in their seven overs.

The all-rounder took 32 balls to reach his fifty and reached the three-digit off just 51 balls. He remained till the end to take the Super Kings home in the 19th over. Watson remained unbeaten on 117. The knock came off just 57 balls and studded with 11 fours and eight sixes.

Earlier, in the game, the Sunrisers had posted 178 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs. Kane Williamson once again top-scored for them, scoring 47. Towards the end, Yusuf Pathan and Carlos Brathwaite played quickfire knocks to fire their team to a good total. However, the score was not just good enough to stop the Super Kings.

Such was Watson’s batting display that even former Sunrisers skipper David Warner could not do much but praise his compatriot. Warner took to Twitter to praise Watson and also lauded the Sunrisers for their brilliant performance this season, tweeting:

“Seriously good knock by @ShaneRWatson33 well done mate simply amazing to watch. Not the result @SunRisers wanted but you have to pat yourselves on the back and say well done for the way you played throughout the tournament ?”
