Chennai Super Kings not only finished their IPL 2020 campaign with a victory but also continued their three-match winning streak. Despite that, they could not reach the playoffs as they lost eight matches out of 14, pushing them out of contention. It was indeed the three-time champions’ first edition without making it to the knockouts, which indeed threw plenty of surprises.

The significant problem for the Chennai Super Kings’ was their batting performances in the first half of the tournament as they failed to raise the tempo during the powerplay. Moreover, the yellow army also had injury problems apart from two of their experienced players opting out before the competition. These factors largely unsettled the side.

We take a look at Chennai Super Kings’ players’ performance ratings for IPL 2020:

MS Dhoni – 5/10:

With the bat, MS Dhoni suffered the most underwhelming of his IPL editions as he managed only 200 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 116.28. As a captain, there were quite a few questionable decisions throughout the tournament; however, it only got better as it progressed. The 39-year old receives a rating of 5.

Deepak Chahar – 6/10:

Deepak Chahar, who is excellent with the new ball, performed well in patches for the yellow army. In 14 matches, Deepak Chahar claimed 12 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 7.62. However, the right-arm seamer ended up with an average of 33, which is higher than the last two seasons. Nevertheless, for spearheading the bowling attack and frequently picking wickets, he receives a rating of 6.

Piyush Chawla – 4/10:

Piyush Chawla was one of the buys for the Chennai Super Kings in the auction, fetching INR 6.75 crores. Nevertheless, Piyush Chawla could not live up to the hype, claiming six wickets in seven matches at 31.83 with an economy rate of 9.10. Much was expected from the leggie, who was a veteran of 150 IPL games before the current season.

Sam Curran – 8/10:

Sam Curran was the only overseas player for the Super Kings to play all 14 games, being one of the purchases in the auction. Sam Curran could not precisely fulfill the expectations; however, he was highly promising. The left-arm seamer picked up 13 wickets with an economy rate of 8.19 and managed 186 runs with the bat, maintaining a strike rate of 131. The 22-year old will have a massive part to play in the rebuilding of the squad.

Faf Du Plessis – 8/10:

Faf Du Plessis was the only player from the Super Kings’ line-up to cross 400 runs in IPL 2020, managing 449 runs from 13 fixtures. Faf Du Plessis averaged 40.82 with a strike rate of 140.75 alongside four half-centuries. The former South African captain also took some exceptional catches on the field and will most likely be retained for the next season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad – 9/10:

Ruturaj Gaikwad was perhaps the find for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020, striking three fifties in the last three games to earn the man of the match awards. The right-handed batsman did perish for a first-ball duck against the Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah; however, made a tremendous comeback to fix his spot for IPL 2021.

Josh Hazlewood – 2/10:

Josh Hazlewood was yet another cricketer purchased by the Super Kings in the auction at a reasonable amount. Nevertheless, Josh Hazlewood could not find enough opportunities, featuring in only three games and taking only one wicket. It remains to be seen whether the three-time champions retain the Australian seamer.

Imran Tahir – 2/10:

Imran Tahir, who ended IPL 2019 with the purple cap, did not even play half the season in 2020. And in those three fixtures, the only wicket Imran Tahir took was of Chris Gayle, finishing the tournament with an average of 76. Hence, inevitably, he gets a low rating.

Ravindra Jadeja – 7/10:

Ravindra Jadeja struggled in the first half of the tournament; however, his performances significantly raised in the second half, playing some vital cameos. In 14 matches, Jadeja scored 232 runs at 46.40 while maintaining a strike rate of 171.85. Nevertheless, the left-arm spinner managed only six wickets and earns a rating of 7.

Kedar Jadhav – 1/10:

Kedar Jadhav was one of the massive disappointments of IPL 2020 and a player, who fetches INR 7.80 crores. Kedar Jadhav played a staggering eight matches, managing 62 runs at 20.67 while maintaining a strike rate of less than 100. The 35-year old might not be sure of being retained by the Super Kings for IPL 2021.

Narayan Jagadeesan – 4/10:

Narayan Jagadeesan delivered a promising performance against Royal Challengers Bangalore, scoring 33 off 28 deliveries, showing the correct intent. Nevertheless, against Mumbai Indians, he perished for a first-ball duck. And as such, he batted in only two innings out of the five games he played in IPL 2020. Jagadeesan gets a rating of 4.

Monu Kumar – 2/10:

Monu Kumar made his debut in IPL 2020 against Royal Challengers Bangalore after being with the Super Kings since 2018. The right-arm seamer delivered two overs for only 20 runs, going wicketless. Nevertheless, Monu showed the potential that he could be one of the talents to watch out for and earns a rating of 2.

Lungi Ngidi – 6/10:

Lungi Ngidi surprisingly played only four matches in IPL 2020 but yielded rich returns, grabbing nine wickets at 18.56 with best figures of 4/10. The South African seamer had only one bad game, which was against the Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah, leaking 56 in four with five sixes. Nevertheless, Ngidi recovered well in the second half and earns a rating of 6/10.

Ambati Rayudu – 8/10:

Ambati Rayudu enjoyed a highly promising IPL 2020, mustering 359 runs in 12 games despite managing only one half-century. Ambati Rayudu started the tournament in a rollicking manner, hammering 71 against Mumbai Indians to take the Super Kings to victory. The veteran batsman suffered an injury, missing a few games but played key roles in a few more wins. Rayudu gets a rating of 8.

Mitchell Santner – 5/10:

Left-arm spinner and all-rounder Mitchell Santner played only two matches in IPL 2020 and performed his role to good effect. In two games, he took two wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 7.57. The Kiwi cricketer could have made a difference in the lower-order batting had he played more games.

Karn Sharma – 4/10:

Leg-spinner Karn Sharma, who has been part of title-winning teams of Mumbai Indians, SunRisers Hyderabad, and Chennai Super Kings, played in five matches and took as many scalps. However, those came at an average of 33 and an economy rate of 8.68. Sharma gets a rating of 4.

Shardul Thakur – 6/10:

Seamer Shardul Thakur endured a forgetful tour of New Zealand before the lockdown as the Kiwi batsmen thrashed his bowling at will. However, Shardul Thakur performed reasonably well in IPL 2020, picking up ten wickets in nine games at 27.50 with an economy rate of 8.51, earning a rating of 6.

Murali Vijay – 1/10:

Murali Vijay was one of the other significant disappointments for the Super Kings in IPL 2020, playing three matches and hardly making a difference. In three games that he opened, the right-handed batsman only managed 32 runs at an awful average of 10.67. Likely, Super Kings will not retain him for the next season.

Shane Watson – 5/10:

Shane Watson played 11 out of 14 matches in IPL 2020 wherein his performances significantly dipped as compared to the other seasons. The 39-year old managed only 299 runs at 29.90 with a strike rate of 121.05. Reports have suggested that Watson has retired from all forms of cricket and would be unavailable for the Super Kings from next year.

Dwayne Bravo – 4/10:

Dwayne Bravo, who always performs outstandingly in IPL, could not replicate the same in IPL 2020 as injuries kept curbing his potential. After missing the first few games, Dwayne Bravo played six games, taking as many scalps and managing only seven runs as the management sent him relatively low in the batting order. The groin injury returned, forcing the 36-year old to return home and miss the remaining fixtures.
