MS Dhoni Should Be Playing Domestic Cricket: Sunil Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels MS Dhoni should turn to domestic cricket in order to inspire youngsters from Jharkhand.

The most decorated skipper in the history of Indian cricket, Dhoni hails from a state which did not boast of any big name before his arrival at the international stage. The scenario, however, has changed for the better in recent years. The likes of Saurabh Tiwary, Shahbaz Nadeem and Ishan Kishan are some of the big names from Jharkhand.

And Gavaskar feels Dhoni should turn back to playing domestic cricket which can inspire more players.

“Absolutely (when asked if Dhoni should feature in domestic cricket). Dhoni should be playing domestic cricket. And should be playing the four-day games as well because he will help so many of the emerging players from Jharkhand.

“I know he travels with the team (Jharkhand). He acts as their mentor but to actually have him playing with them is a great inspiration. He will be a great inspiration to the younger players in the team,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Well, playing in domestic cricket can also help Dhoni regain his batting form. This year Dhoni has aggregated just 189 runs in 9 ODI innings at a paltry average of 27 with a highest score of just 42.

Things have not looked good for Dhoni since his stunning show in the IPL where he led Chennai Super Kings to the title.

The World Cup-winning skipper has been attracting severe criticism for his poor batting since the tour of England. While the right-handed batsman managed to score handy runs, he coped criticism for his defensive approach.

In the second ODI, he scored 37 off 59 balls as India were all out for just 236 while chasing 323. He struggled in the third ODI too. Dhoni managed to score 42 but used up 66 deliveries for the same.

And Dhoni’s woes have continued in the ongoing Asia Cup too where he has scored 0, 33 and 8.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
