Andre Adams has been appointed as the new bowling coach of New South Wales.

New South Wales, on Tuesday, appointed former New Zealand fast-bowler Andre Adams as their new bowling coach.

Adams represented New Zealand from 2002 to 2007. He made his international debut in March 2002. However, injuries saw him losing his place in the team to Jacob Oram.

He played in the 2003 World Cup but soon lost his place again. Adams got a lifeline towards the end of 2004 when he received a very late call-up to New Zealand’s one-day squad for the series against England. The bowling all-rounder did not play any game on that tour.

However, Andre ended up signing with Essex and played for them for the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

He later received a call for three ODIs against Sri Lanka in December. However, Adams’ career came to an end in 2007 when he did not receive the national contract. Overall, he played one Test, 42 ODIs and four T20Is. He scored close to 500 runs in addition to picking up 62 wickets in international cricket.

Adams, however, enjoyed a prolific first-class career both in New Zealand as well as England. In 173 first-class games, he picked up a staggering 692 wickets in addition to scoring over 4,500 runs.

After the end of his playing career, he took to coaching. In 2015, he joined Auckland Cricket Club as bowling coach for the 2015/16 season.

Expressing his delight over the new role, he said,

“NSW cricket has a wonderful culture of success, and I’m delighted to be given the opportunity help add to that culture. I’m not so much the technical bowling coach; I’m more how you manage situations and how you problem solve. We did a few things at training on Monday around ‘if you needed to do this how would you do it?’

“It’s what you need to do in a game; it’s just done a little differently than your traditional coaches.”

He will join head coach Phil Jaques in the NSW set-up. The former Kiwi pacer would get a chance to work with the likes of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

Jacques welcomed Adams to NSW and is confident the team would benefit from his presence.

“Andre comes highly recommended, and we look forward to the significant contribution he can make across our squad,” Jaques said. “Senior players will benefit from his approach as a solutions-based coach and the young fast bowlers we have in the squad will learn from a bowler who was successful in first-class cricket for almost 20 years.”

Wicketkeeper-batsman Peter Nevill will lead the side in the upcoming season.
