Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has revealed his prediction for the upcoming ODI series between India and Australia. Both the teams will lock horns in the mouth-watering three-match series that gets underway on Tuesday (January 14) in Mumbai. India as well as Australia are in stunning form at the moment.

Barring the one T20I against Pakistan that did not yield any result due to rain, Australia won each and every game in their home season before landing in India. The season started with a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka in T20Is and was followed by 2-0 win over Pakistan in the same format. It was followed by five consecutive Test wins (2-0 against Pakistan, 3-0 against New Zealand).

India, on the other hand, beat South Africa, Bangladesh, West Indies and Sri Lanka in T20I series. They also beat South Africa and Bangladesh in Tests and West Indies in ODIs. With both the teams in stunning form right now, the upcoming series promises to be a cracking affair.

Ricky Ponting’s prediction:

Ahead of the series, Ricky Ponting has predicted that while India will be keen to redeem themselves, the visitors will win the series 2-1. Last year, Australia won the T20Is 2-0 before winning the ODIs 3-2 after losing the first two games of the ODI series in India. Ponting revealed his prediction while interacting with his followers on Twitter.

“Australia will be full of confidence after an excellent World Cup and a great summer of Test cricket but India will be keen to redeem themselves from the last ODI series loss against Australia. Prediction: 2-1 Australia,” Ponting tweeted.

The legendary batsman also had some words of praise for Marnus Labuschagne who is set to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series. Labuschagne finished 2019 as the top run-scorer in Tests and will be looking to hit the ground running in ODIs.

“I think he’ll do a great job for Australia in the middle-order. He’s a very good player of spin, a very good runner between the wickets, gun in the field and can bowl some handy leg-spin, so the overall package is very appealing,” said Ponting about Labuschagne.
