Current BCCI president and 1983 World Cup-winning player Roger Binny contradicted the 83 movie scene. He said that the picture portrayed that they looked at the West Indies team in awe. But that didn’t happen as they were not overawed by them.

India is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1983 World Cup triumph. The Kapil Dev-led side thumped mighty West Indies by 43 runs in the final and lifted their maiden title in the history of the game. The team played like champions and were at the top of the game.

To the joy of Indian fans, a movie was created on that World Cup-winning triumph and it had a huge success. But there were quite a few scenes that Roger Binny felt were portrayed wrong. He said that such things didn’t happen and it was a different vision of it.

Roger Binny said that they didn’t discuss about cricket that day apart from the meeting as they were in a good frame of mind. Speaking to Sportstar, he explained:

“The movie ‘83’ shows us (team India) waiting for the bus in the airport upon arrival in England. The scene shows that as all the West Indies players go past us, we look at them in awe. But in reality, such a thing did not happen. We were not overawed by them.

“We never discussed cricket the whole day. Of course, there would be team meetings, but besides that, we did not talk much about the game. We had lots of fun; we would crack jokes on the team bus. We had so many people with a good sense of humour, so the atmosphere was good, and each one was a character by himself—be it Yashpal, Kirti, or Sandeep—so it was a happy dressing room.”

“I was making a comeback to the Indian team,” Roger Binny says he wanted to do well for the team

Roger Binny, who played a key role for the team in the 1983 World Cup, talked about his personal performance. He said that he was making a comeback and was determined to perform. He explained:

“I was making a comeback to the Indian team after being dropped earlier, so I was determined to perform to the best of my abilities. Just before the World Cup, I had a good Ranji Trophy campaign, so on a comeback trail, I wanted to do well. Luckily, the conditions suited my sort of bowling, and I could seam well.” He concluded.
