Rohit Sharma is the only batsman in the history of the game to score three double-hundreds in One-day International cricket. The right-handed opener smashed his maiden double-hundred against Australia in 2013 and followed it up a record-breaking 264 a year later against Sri Lanka. His third double-hundred also came against Sri Lanka back in 2017.

But, coincidently, in two [209 & 264] of the three double-hundreds that Rohit Sharma has scored, he and Virat Kohli were involved in a miscommunication as far as running between the wickets is concerned, leading to the latter getting run-out.

Rohit opened up on those two instances during a recent Instagram Live session with Ravichandran Ashwin.

“It happened twice. Even when I scored 264, he got run-out in that game. In that Bangalore game, he was on strike and he punched the ball from the right-hand side of the bowler. So your natural tendency, when you are at the non-striker end, is to go back and save yourself. So I went back and by the time I turned to see where he was, he was right there. There was no way I could have made it to the other side.” Rohit Sharma told Ravi Ashwin.

The first instance of the trend took place during the 7th ODI of the 2013 series against Australia. Virat Kohli was in great form throughout that series and so with him getting run-out cheaply, did Rohit Sharma felt the pressure of making up for the run-out?

He got a 50-ball 100 in that series. He was in great form. So obviously, if you lose a player in that fashion, you want to make up for it, you don’t want to leave it to someone else. You need guys who are in form to bat as much as possible. And we lost two of them. Shikhar was in great form, he made 60 from 40 and Virat got out cheaply, on zero. Obviously then it was my responsibility to stay till the end.” Sharma added.

Rohit not only made up for Virat’s run-out but he also went on to shellack his maiden double-hundred which helped India to eventually take a 3-2 lead in the series.
