Shubman Gill was just seventeen when he broke into the senior Punjab team. There he was welcomed by Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh – two of the greatest cricketers to have played for the nation. Any youngster would have been overawed by the two. However, Shubman Gill tried not be overawed by the two and instead tried to use the opportunity to learn.
But as the time passed by, he ended up being inspired by Yuvraj Singh. Recalling his early days with the Punjab team, the youngster said that his illustrious seniors were very helpful before revealing that Yuvraj is his inspiration. Shubman Gill stated that he was inspired by Yuvraj’s unbelievable journey in the game.
The youngster also said that Yuvraj has helped him get ready for the highest level of cricket.
“I tried not to get overawed by them. They were very helpful. Yuvi paa is my inspiration. His journey, his struggles with his health and the way he looks at the game is so inspirational. That has helped me so much to get ready for the top grade of cricket,” Shubman Gill told ToI.
Shubman Gill has also spent a lot of time with the legendary Rahul Dravid during his India U19 and India days. The former India skipper is often credited for grooming the likes of Gill, Prithvi Shaw and other youngsters. Speaking about Dravid, Gill said:
“Rahul sir has always talked about being a good human being. I haven’t cleared my Class XII exams yet because they coincide with my cricket engagements. But I would love to complete my basic education.”
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, on Thursday, earned his maiden Test call-up for the upcoming series against South Africa. He has been picked in the team as a reserve opener.
