South Africa Cricket team skipper Faf du Plessis has admitted that limited-overs leg against Pakistan won’t be a smooth sail despite beating them 3-0 in the Test series.

In addition to, the South African skipper admitted that Pakistan are a much strong side and the upcoming series will be a challenge for his team. The five-match ODI series commences from January 19 (Saturday) at Port Elizabeth.

Pakistan is a very good one day side and probably they would be the first to say that from a performance point of view, their one-day team is much stronger,” Du Plessis said. “We’re a one day side that’s still trying to find that balance in our team,” he said after South Africa’s training session at St George’s Park. “With Quinny [de Kock] and Dale [Steyn] not here in the first two games, it actually gives us an opportunity to look at what else we need to look at, which is important,” he further added.

South Africa keen to fill the all-rounder spot

Although South Africa have their batting-order sorted, there are doubts over the all-rounder spot with Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, Wiaan Mulder and Dwaine Pretorius all competing to book their place in the World Cup squad. Faf Du Plessis hopes that one or two of the players mentioned above could make it into the team and everybody will get equal opportunities ahead of the mega event.

It’s an answer [all-rounder spot] that I’m hoping to give to you after this series,” said du Plessis. “We’re hoping that over the next 10 games, over the Sri Lanka series as well, all the allrounders that are there in Andile Phehlukwayo, Wiaan Mulder, Chris Morris and Dwaine Pretorius, that you’ll at least have one or two of those guys who really put their hand up and shout to the selectors ‘pick me’, he added.

In conclusion, talking about the combination for the first ODI, Faf du Plessis revealed that they are likely to use more than one spin options.
