New Zealand keeper-batsman Tom Blundell became a victim of a bizarre dismissal while playing for Wellington in the Plunkett Shield, New Zealand’s first-class competition. Tom Blundell was adjudged as out for what was known as obstructing the field and as a result, became only second Black Caps cricketer to be out in such fashion. The 30-year old has played for the national team in six Tests, two ODIs, and three T20Is.

The incident occurred when Tom Blundell edged a ball from Jacob Tuffey of Otago as it was about to hit the stumps. In an effort to stop the ball from striking the timber, the batsman used his hands to swat it away as players appealed in unison. Without the umpire signaling anything, Blundell walked back towards the pavilion for his actions. Tom Blundell had already made 101 before his dismissal on the fourth day of the clash against Otago.

The Wellington-born cricketer became the second Kiwi player after John Hayes to depart in that manner. As far as Test cricket goes, former English cricketer Len Hutton is the only batsman to perish as a result of obstructing the field when it happened against South Africa in 1951. New Zealand national team will resume their international duties in November last week, playing the West Indies at home. The Black Caps and the Caribbeans will lock horns in three T20Is and two Tests. Blundell, who has done well in Test cricket, so far, is likely to find a spot.
