Chennai Super Kings [CSK] survived a late scare from Rashid Khan to eventually seal a 20-run-win against SunRisers Hyderabad [SRH] at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday.

Defending 168, CSK needed to break the dangerous opening pair of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow. And, Sam Curran ensured that they did exactly that by dismissing Warner for 13-ball 9 in his second over.

One brought two for the Super Kings thanks to an ill-fated attempt of a single by Manish Pandey and a brilliant direct-hit by Dwayne Bravo.

Just 30 runs came in the next five overs as Kane Williamson and Jonny Bairstow looked to milk the bowling without taking any risk even as the asking rate climbed past 10.

Ravindra Jadeja eventually saw the back of Bairstow courtesy a straighter delivery; one that skidded off the deck before bamboozling the English opener’s stumps. Priyam Garg too perished for the cause after being holed out in the deep off Shardul Thakur to leave SRH reeling at 4-101 after 15 overs.

With 59 needed off 24 balls, SRH needed sustained assault from both Williamson and Vijay Shankar. Shankar started the 17th over with a six off Dwayne Bravo before he eventually perished thanks to a brilliant wide yorker by the champion death bowler, which Shankar hit straight to the third-man. Williamson brought up his half-century with a four on the next delivery to reduce the equation to 46 off last 18.

Williamson smashed the first ball of Karn Sharma’s over for a boundary but one shot proved too many for the Kiwi skipper as he holed out in the deep on the very next delivery.

Rashid Khan came and immidately smoked Sharma for a six and a four on his first two deliveries before Nadeem chipped-in with a boundary to bring the equation to 27 runs off 12 balls. The second last saw plenty of drama as the umpire did not give a wide when the ball was clearly outside the trampline. Khan was eventually dismissed on the final ball of the 19th over after his bat slipped on his off-stump. With Khan dismissed, the game was as good as over and Bravo ensured that it stayed that way as he dismissed Nadeem on the 3rd ball of the final over, eventually seeling the deal for CSK.

Batting first, Chennai Super Kings made a left field choice by slotting Sam Curran at the top of the order alongside Faf du Plessis.

Curran struggled against Sandeep Sharma in the first over, eventually paving way for a frustrated Faf du Plessis to get dismissed on his very first delivery.

But Curran ensured that he did exactly what was asked of him as he took Khaleel Ahmed to the cleaners, smashing him for two fours and as many sixes in the 5th over. Curran scored a 21-ball 31 before Sandeep Sharma knocked him over with a brute of delivery; one that seamed back into the southpaw to dislodge his leg-stump.

However, post Curran’s dismissal, normal services resumed as Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu managed just 35 runs in the next six overs.

The duo upped the ante in the next three overs by scoring 28 to take the total to 2-102 after 14 overs. Post the time-out, Shane Watson [42 off 38 balls] and Ambati Rayudu [41 off 34 balls] smashed Rashid Khan for two sixes in one over but the duo eventually perished in an attempt to do an encore against Khaleel Ahmed and T Natarajan.

MS Dhoni targeted T Natarajan, smashing him for two boundaries and a monstrous 102 meter six before the left-hander eventually dismissed the veteran with a near-perfect wide yorker. However, Ravindra Jadeja’s 10-ball 25 ensured that CSK eventually posted 6-167 in 20 overs.
