Courtesy Tim Seifert 43-ball 84 and two wickets each for Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi, New Zealand won the first of the three T20Is against India in Wellington. Earlier, the hosts batted first and posted a mammoth 219 for six. India, while chasing did begin well but lost the plot as the game progressed. Though Shikhar Dhawan found some gaps inside the Powerplay overs, none of the middle-order batsmen clicked; thus leaving India’s situation in a dire state in Wellington.
New Zealand takes 1-0 lead in the T20Is
New Zealand had faced the wrath in the ODI series, losing 1-4 to India. Meanwhile, in the T20Is, they turned the tables around. Batting first in the first T20I, the hosts began on a brilliant note. The openers, Colin Munro and Tim Seifert, scored 66 runs inside the Powerplay overs. The right-handed Tim did the bulk of the scoring, collecting 84 runs off 43 balls. Not only him, but captain Williamson also scored 34 alongside opener, Munro. Later in the innings, 20 from Scott Kuggeleijn and 23 from Taylor helped New Zealand post 219 runs.
India, on the other hand, lost Rohit Sharma early on one. Then, the pair of Shankar and Dhawan did some hitting but couldn’t capitalise any further. India, in the middle order, lost the wickets in a cluster; as a result, they lost the first T20I by 80 runs.
Here is how the Twitter reacted –
Worst defeats in two formats of the game under Rohit's captaincy in almost a week.

Nothing’s worked for India today except Rohit Sharma winning the toss. And his decision to field first seems to be boomeranging badly
