Luck seems to have deserted South Africa and their skipper Faf du Plessis in their ongoing series against India. Even before the start of the series, Faf du Plessis had said that the team could not have asked for a tougher assignment to start its campaign in the ICC Test Championship. And the way the series have panned out so far, it is safe to say that the Proteas skipper was spot on.

India have thoroughly outplayed the visitors in the first two games of the two series thus far. Barring the first innings of the series-opener where they scored more than 400, South Africa have nothing to show from the series. No surprises then that they have already conceded the series after being defeated comprehensively in the first two Tests.

India beat the tourists by an innings and 137 runs in the second Test to register their biggest win over South Africa. What has made things worse for Faf du Plessis is his poor luck with toss. He lost the tosses in the first two games and his team paid the price for it. The inexperienced South African batsmen could not cope up with the formidable Indian bowling on worn-out pitches.

And with nothing working out on the field, Faf du Plessis decided to do some innovation with the toss. The South Africa skipper brought Temba Bavuma with himself at the toss and let him decide the fate of the toss. However, the use of ‘proxy captain’ did not work as Bavuma lost the toss, leaving India captain Virat Kohli in split.

Here is the video of the toss posted by BCCI:

“It shows that it isn’t meant to be (about using Bavuma as a proxy skipper for luck). Important toss as this looks the driest surface of the series. It’s about the first innings really and we need to put runs on the board when we bat. One forced change with Aiden (Markram),” said Faf du Plessis after Bavuma lost the toss.
