Indian women’s team head coach WV Raman in a recent interview said that India, as of yet, does not have the talented pool of players to hold a full-fledged Women’s IPL.

Raman, since taking charge of the Indian ladies, 14 months back, has forged the team into a well-rounded unit, especially in the T20 format.

His efforts saw the Indian women’s team reach their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup final, although Harmanpreet Kaur’s side fell just short of lifting the trophy, having remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.

Despite the upturn in fortunes under Raman’s tutelage, the coach himself feels that as a nation, India is not yet ready for a Women’s IPL because of lack of talented players.

The 54-year-old coach WV Raman sat down for a tete-a-tete session with Cricbuzz, wherein he revealed his opinions about the Women’s IPL.

“My view is that as of now, we are not yet ready for a full-fledged IPL. What is a full-fledged IPL? If we’re talking of an eight-team IPL, I don’t think we are ready yet. Taking it nice and easy, a gradual thing, will be the best course of action. Yes, from two teams to three, and from three teams to four (in the Women’s T20 Challenge) is happening,” said Raman.

Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has gained a huge fan following in India as well as in other nations as well.

Owing to the Indian ladies’ thrilling performances at the Women’s T20 World Cup, there have been calls to organise a Women’s IPL, to identify young talented players, but Raman has other ideas in order to discover new talent.

“Instead of them playing once against each other, you can increase the quantum of matches, they can play each other twice. With the U-23 and ‘A’ tours happening for the girls as well, you will have a lot more talent coming through, which means in about three years’ time, we should be ready for a proper IPL kind of tournament,” stated the former Indian cricketer.
