The BCCI has named the Indian squad that will be traveling to Sri Lanka in July for the limited-overs leg and the consistent performances of youngsters have been rewarded with a place. The senior pro-Shikhar Dhawan has been named the captain of the side and along with the 20 member squad, 5 net bowlers have also been picked up.
With the T20 world cup coming up this year, it will be important for India to test their bench strength and this could also be the last opportunity for certain fringe players who have been under the radar. BCCI has made sure that the players get enough opportunities in international cricket and a decision has made only on performances. With an eye on that, here are 3 impressive decisions taken by the BCCI in selecting India’s squad for Sri Lanka.
3 Impressive Decisions Taken By The BCCI In Selecting India’s Squad For Sri Lanka:
Giving Ruturaj Gaikwad And Devdutt Padikkal A Place In The Squad:
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal have been the most impressive openers among the youngsters for the last two years and they have earned their maiden call up to the side. Gaikwad has been very consistent for Chennai Super Kings at the top of the order and he has been an exceptional talent that needed to be managed properly.
Gaikwad may have wait in the pecking order to get his Indian cap but he is going to learn a lot from being in the Indian dressing room. On the other hand, Padikkal could be the first choice backup option and he has performed brilliantly so far in the last two years. With the Indian future in the hands of both players, it was important for BCCI to reward their performances to keep motivating them and to understand each other’s game.
Giving Chetan Sakariya A Place In The Squad:
Chetan Sakariya was expected to make the Indian squad after his recent performances in IPL and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and BCCI had done the right thing by giving the youngster a go. India has been short of left-arm seamers and Chetan Sakariya can be groomed into one in the future if he is properly managed.
Sakariya picked up 7 wickets in the 7 games this season and he kept testing the batsmen by bowling great lengths and lines. He had to go through a lot for earning him a spot in the IPL this year and he deserved a place in the Indian squad too. His seam positions in the powerplay and his variations in the death overs have been a hallmark of his game so far.
3. Naming Bhuvneshwar Kumar The Vice Captain Of The Side
The Indian medium-pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar will take over the vice-captain of the Indian team in the Sri Lankan tour and he will be one of the seniors in the squad. He will lead the Indian pace attack in the absence of the senior bowlers and has been in really good form in the recent limited-overs series against England.
Bhuvneshwar has been dealing with a lot of injuries of late and he has found it hard to make it to the Indian side in the last year or so. He will be a key player in the side for Sri Lanka and has led the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the absence of David Warner. He deserves to be the deputy on the side having served the nation for a long time now.
