Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has targeted a foreign media outlet for spreading rumors of pitch change after India defeated New Zealand in the first semi-final in Mumbai by 70 runs. In the process, India made it to a World Cup final for the first time in 12 years.

Before the IND vs NZ semi-final game in Mumbai, foreign media claimed that the pitch was changed on behalf of the Indian team management who asked for a slower track. However, the way the match panned out with over 700 runs being scored made Sunil Gavaskar keep his point about doctored pitch.

Nonsense: Sunil Gavaskar On Pitch Criticism

“This has been such a good pitch to bat on. We’ve had nearly 730 runs scored here. All those morons who were talking about the pitch being changed and that it would do the Indian bowlers a favour, I hope they will just shut up. Stop taking potshots at India just because it helps you get eyeballs. Nonsense” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.

He further said that even if the pitch was changed it was changed before the game and both the teams played on the same surface throughout the game. According to him, it was a good wicket and both teams played good cricket.

“Even if the pitch was changed, it was there before the toss for both the teams. It wasn’t changed in the mid-innings. It wasn’t changed after the toss was done. The pitch was the same for both teams. You are a good enough team, you play on that pitch and you win. And India has done that. So stop talking about pitches. Already they’re talking about the pitch in Ahmedabad [the venue for the final]. The second semi-final hasn’t even taken place, you’re talking about the pitch being changed in Ahmedabad,” Gavaskar added.

The ICC previously in a statement that the ICC independent consultant was made aware of the change before the match.

“Changes to planned pitch rotations are common towards the end of an event of this length and has already happened a couple of times. This change was made on the recommendation of the venue curator in conjunction with our host. The ICC independent pitch consultant was apprised of the change and has no reason to believe the pitch won’t play well,” ICC stated as per ESPNcricinfo.

India scored 397/4 on the back of centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer after a bright start from skipper Rohit Sharma. New Zealand fought hard in the chase with Daryl Mitchell scoring 134 and sharing an 181-run stand with Kane Williamson (69)to keep Indian fans on the edge. Ultimately India won the match by 70 runs after Mohammed Shami picked up 7/57.
