3 Reasons Why Shikhar Dhawan Deserved A Place In India’s Squad For T20 World Cup. The BCCI recently announced the T20 Worldcup squad for India that will be traveling to UAE and some big names including Shikhar Dhawan did miss out on the squad which has raised some eyebrows. The 15 member squad and 3 reserves were announced yesterday and they have covered almost all the bases so far.
MS Dhoni will be traveling with the Indian team as well as the mentor which is an excellent sign for the whole team as he could add a lot of value to the side. Apart from that, the BCCI has also recalled Ashwin into the limited-overs setup after three years and also Axar Patel has made the cut into the squad. Shikhar Dhawan missed out on the squad and here are 3 reasons why Shikhar Dhawan deserved a place in India’s squad for T20 Worldcup.
3 Reasons Why Shikhar Dhawan Deserved A Place In India’s Squad For T20 World Cup:
Shikhar Dhawan’s Last Two IPL Performances
Shikhar Dhawan has been one of the standout players in the IPL in the last two editions and he has certainly upgraded his game to the best. The left-hander was the second-highest run-getter in the IPL 2020 in UAE and notched up two consecutive centuries as well.
Also, Dhawan is the highest run-scorer in IPL 2021 already with 380 runs in 8 games at an average of 54.28. He has been in the form of his life and his IPL numbers certainly make him a candidate for the opening slot for India in T20 Worldcup. He does know the UAE conditions really well as well and he has improved his strike rate vastly in the last two IPL seasons.
Left-Hander Option At The Top
Shikhar Dhawan would have been the ideal left-hand option for India at the top of the order, to open with Rohit Sharma as it has been a big advantage in bigger boundaries in UAE. India has the likes of Ishan Kishan who can bat in the top four if needed, but he is not a certainty in the playing XI which means KL Rahul is likely to open with Rohit Sharma.
It makes it highly improbable for India to include Ishan Kishan as well as KL Rahul in the playing XI and it will mean that India will have no option for the left-hander in the top four unless they drop KL Rahul. Shikhar Dhawan’s inclusion would have made sure that all these questions were answered.
Shikhar Dhawan’s ICC Tournament Performances
Shikhar Dhawan steps up for the country in crucial times and the veteran has been one of India’s finest batsmen in limited-overs cricket for a long time. The left-hander was the man of the tournament when India won the Champions trophy in 2013 and he has always been a consistent performer for India in ICC Tournaments.
Shikhar was also phenomenal in the ICC 2015 Worldcup and the ICC 2019 Worldcup until he was injured which shows his hunger to perform in big tournaments. He has the experience to do the job and he certainly deserved a place in the Indian squad for the T20 Worldcup.
