Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that India should play with 3 spinners in their next Super 12 encounter versus Afghanistan, which will take place in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

India have lost both their games so far, to Pakistan and New Zealand, and face Mohammad Nabi’s side in a must-win clash; a loss to Afghanistan, who already have 4 points, will see India out of the semi-final race.

Sunil Gavaskar highlighted that since Hardik Pandya bowled two overs versus New Zealand, the team may drop a pacer – either Shardul Thakur or Mohammed Shami, who is wicket-less in both matches – for a spinner.

“Also, there is no harm in thinking of going with 3 spinners also. And maybe not have somebody like Sharul Thakur or Mohammed Shami. Go in with 2 seamers and 3 spinners because if Hardik can come in and 2 overs of medium pace, you will still have 3 medium pacers in the team,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

Definitely, I would look at someone like R Ashwin: Sunil Gavaskar

Speaking particularly about R Ashwin, the legendary opener believes that the off-spinner should be drafted in the eleven replacing Varun Chakravarthy.

Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that since Afghanistan have plenty of mystery spinners themselves, they are unlikely to be troubled by Chakravarthy, who has not looked threatening in the two matches so far. Another option which the 72-year-old suggested is leg-spinner Rahul Chahar.

“A top-class spinner like R Ashwin, it doesn’t make any difference whether he is bowling to a right-hander or a left-hander. Having a look at the number of mystery spinners that Afghanistan themselves have, look at someone like Miujeeb and some of the others who they don’t play in the XI, they have a plethora of all these mystery spinners.

“So it might be easy for them to pick someone like a Varun Chakravarthy. So definitely, I would look at someone like R Ashwin. If at all, they are looking for someone who will slow the pace down, they can look at Rahul Chahar,” the commentator added.

Pakistan are leading Group 2 with 6 points after 3 wins in 3 games, followed by Afghanistan, who have four points after wins over Scotland and Namibia. New Zealand and Namibia hold the third and the fourth spot respectively with two points each, while India languish at the fifth and Scotland at the last with no points.
