The Indian cricket team has been experimenting with Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav as openers in an effort to provide backup alternatives for various places within the batting line. Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta has proposed a new name as the third-choice opener, behind KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, with the T20 World Cup 2022 in mind.

In T20 International matches, Rahul and Rohit are India’s preferred opening duo. Pant and Surya have been attempted as openers because Rahul was unable to be chosen. However, Dasgupta thinks the selectors ought to attempt Prithvi Shaw as the backup opener.

Prithivi Shaw Can Be The Looked Upon As Backup Opener For T20 World Cup: Deep Dasgupta

In a video that Crictracker uploaded to YouTube, Deep Dasgupta remarked.

“KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma would be my first choice [for T20 World Cup]. As a third opener, you can look at options like Prithvi Shaw, who has done extremely well in that opener slot and gives you a different skill set. The way he starts, he might not give you 70s, 80s, or hundreds, but he can give you a brisk start,”

Ishan Kishan was another possibility that Dasgupta considered, but the aggressive batter, in his opinion, had lost his edge recently.

“Ishan [Kishan], if you look at the internationals, he’s done alright. He starts well but lost his mojo a bit now in the last few games,” he said.

India Can Field A Team With 3 Wicket-keepers: Deep Dasgupta

Following the completion of the 15th Indian Premier League, many new players have been added to the Indian team (IPL). Only a select number of them, nevertheless, have been able to make an enduring effect. Of particular, the increase in wicket-keepers has been astounding.

“There are a lot of wicket-keepers who are also good batters. They can fit into not only as keeper-batters but just as batters. Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik. Some players are still in work-in-progress mode like Jitesh Sharma. He has done well in IPL,” the former wicket-keeper opined.

Additionally, according to Deep Dasgupta, India can field a team with up to three possible wicketkeepers at the T20 World Cup in 2022.

“I think there are quite a few options. I am also looking at them from a batting perspective. In such a case, you play 2-3 wicket-keepers in the playing XI. For example- KL Rahul as an opener, Rishabh Pant in the middle-order and Dinesh Karthik as a finisher.”
