The most awaited day of the year for cricket fans has arrived, as India will face arch-rivals in their opening ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday, October 23. After the Asia Cup thrillers, the mother of all clashes between the two teams will be revived.

This will be the 13th World Cup encounter between India and Pakistan. The Babar Azam-led team’s only win over the Men in Blue came last October in Dubai, as Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam successfully chased down India’s 152-run total without losing a wicket, giving Pakistan a 10-wicket victory. Pakistan advanced to the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 semi-finals after being undefeated in the group stage.

One More Victory Will Help India Set New World Record

A win against the arch-rivals will be even sweeter for the “Men in Blue,” who are aiming to surpass Australia’s record as the team with the most victories across all formats in a calendar year.

India’s win against South Africa in the bilateral series was their 38th across formats in 2022, equaling them with Ricky Ponting’s Australia from 2003, when the Aussies won 30 ODIs and 8 Test matches. India’s 38 victories have primarily come in T20Is and ODIs, and another victory will help them set a new world record.

Rohit Sharma, the all-format captain of the Indian cricket team, led the Men in Blue in most of these matches. However, during the tour of South Africa earlier this year, India lost 5 consecutive matches in Tests and ODIs under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

Due to workload management and injuries, the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan, and Rishabh Pant have captained Team India at various stages this year.

India leads Pakistan 5-1 in T20 World Cup head-to-head matches. The Men in Blue defeated their arch-rivals twice in 2007, once in 2012, once in 2014, and once in 2016. However, in 2021, they were defeated by 10 wickets. India is leading 8-3 against Pakistan in head-to-head encounters in T20Is.
