Pakistan are on the verge of elimination from the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 after losing to Zimbabwe by one run at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Thursday, October 27. It was Pakistan’s second consecutive loss in the competition, having been defeated by India on Sunday, October 23.
Pakistan were beaten by India by four wickets in Melbourne, with Virat Kohli’s magnificent performance inspiring the Men in Blue to a dramatic last-over finish. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has criticized Pakistan captain Babar Azam for poor selection in the World Cup.
Pakistan Don’t Have Very Settled Middle Order – Sunil Gavaskar
“They don’t have a very settled middle order. In the T20I matches they played before, Fakhar Zaman played at No.3 or 4. Now he is just part of the squad, but not in the XI. Shan Masood is also there. Although he is scoring runs. But I feel there selection hasn’t been good.”
Mohammad Wasim Jr. looked very impressive against Zimbabwe, taking four wickets for 24 runs and scoring two boundaries in his 13-ball 12. The legendary batsman praised Wasim as a “Hardik Pandya-like player” and criticized Pakistan team management for choosing two spinners against India rather than a pace-bowling all-rounder in the XI.
Mohammad Wasim Jr. Can Play Shots And Give Couple Of Overs – Sunil Gavaskar
“For Australia conditions, if they had a bowler who could seam up, like Mohammad Wasim did against Zimbabwe. And he also played a couple of good shots as well. He has that talent.”
“Unke paas toh Hardik Pandya jaisa player hai (he’s like Hardik Pandya), he’s still new but I’m just giving the idea that he can play those lofty shots and can give you a couple of overs as well. And they did not play him against India. They played two spinners. That is okay in Sydney, but at other venues, you need a player who can give you 3-4 overs and can score 30 runs in the last few overs,” he said.
With only three games remaining, Pakistan will look to finish the tournament on a positive note as they hope for a miracle toward qualification. Pakistan will take on the Netherlands in a Group 2 Super 12 match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday, October 30.
