South Africa brushed aside the disappointment of a washout against Zimbabwe three days ago and produced a brilliant performance against Bangladesh in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Super 12 Group 2 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday, October 27.

South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat first, but the trend in the tournament is usually to field first. Both teams made one change, with Yasir Ali replacing Mehidy Hasan Miraz in Bangladesh and Tabriz Shamsi replacing Lungi Ngidi in South Africa.

Rilee Rossouw and Quinton de Kock recorded the highest partnership for any wicket in World Cup history. Their 168-run partnership surpassed Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene’s record of 166 for the second wicket against the West Indies in 2010.

Earlier, South Africa held the record for the highest T20 World Cup partnership with Herschel Gibbs and Justin Kemp, who put up 120* in the inaugural tournament in 2007.

South Africa’s First Century In T20 World Cup History

Rilee Rossouw scored a magnificent hundred off just 52 balls and became the first South African batter to hit a century in a World Cup match. It’s the first century of the ongoing tournament and only the 10th since the inaugural edition of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa.

The 33-year-old registered the highest score by a South African in a T20 World Cup, scoring 109 runs off 56 balls, including eight sixes and seven fours. The southpaw became the only batsman from a full-member side to hit back-to-back T20I centuries, having scored his previous century against India at Indoors.

South Africa lost momentum in the death overs on a two-paced wicket and just about managed to pass the 200-run mark. They finished with 205/5, the highest score of the World Cup so far. In the last five overs, the Proteas were restricted from 176/2 to 205/5, just 29 runs in 30 balls.
