England go head to head against India in the first ODI after their T20I series loss on July 12, Tuesday at the Kia Oval in London. England are ranked second in the ICC ODI rankings while India are fourth. The series is not a part of the ICC ODI Super League.

Jos Buttler will be leading the ide in the ODIs after being named the side’s new white-ball skipper. He will be itching to set things right after the T20I series loss. Buttler struggled with the moving ball against Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the T20I series as well.

That is another thing that he would like to correct. England have opted to name a 15-member squad with the likes of Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow returning to the ODI outfit. Root played his last ODI for England back in July 2021. Thus he is returning to the squad after almost 12 months. In this article, we take a look at England’s possible playing Xi against India for the first ODI.

Buttler will continue to open the batting for England. Being the captain, he has to take up more responsibilities at the top of the order after his recent failures in the T20I series.

Bairstow can replace Roy at the top of the order. He got back-to-back failures in the T20Is. Thus Jonny Bairstow will replace him at the top and open the batting alongside Butter. He is fresh off a match-winning hundred in the Edgbaston Test and is hungry to score runs.

Joe Root

Root can make a comeback to the playing XI against India. He also scored a century in the historic Edgbaston Test where they chased down a record total to win the Test match.

Moeen Ali

The all-rounder can slot in at number four. He has batted at various positions for England over the years and is an important member of their white-ball squad. Moeen Ali has a role to play in these three matches for his side.

Ben Stokes

Stokes the England Test captain should be back in the ODI playing Xi for the first T20I. He has had a good run as Test captain with four back-to-back wins. He needs to translate his Test form into ODIs now.

Liam Livingstone

Livingstone can play the first ODI as well. He was in decent touch in the T20I series hitting the ball a long distance. He can slot in at number six to bolster England’s batting line-up.

Sam Curran

Curren should slot in at number seven as the fourth all-rounder in this England line-up. The southpaw has a lot of promise with both bat and ball and should be given constant chances, especially in white-ball cricket.

Craig Overton

Overton should be one of the pacers in this playing XI. He posed a few problems for several batsmen with his height. He can still do that with three Indian batsmen, especially with a few who do not like playing the short ball.

Willey can be the third seamer in this England playing Xi. He swings the ball early on in his spell and can pose problems for the Indian opening batsmen. He dismissed his RCB teammate Virat Kohli in the previous game.

Reece Topley

Left-arm pacer Reece Topley took four wickets in the two games that he played in the T20I series. He got the ball to angle away from the batsmen and beat their bats as Indian batsmen succumbed to him. In these swinging conditions, he will be a handful.

Matthew Parkinson

Parkinson can conclude England’s strongest-looking playing Xi for the first T20I. He will be the third spinner in the Xi alongside Ali and Livingstone. England have a good combination of players to choose from if they go with this playing Xi.
