Sunil Gavaskar, a former India captain, believes that all-rounder Rahul Tewatia should’ve been named to the national team for the series against Ireland.
India’s 17-man squad for the two T20Is against Ireland later this month included several young players, some of whom performed admirably in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.
The squad will be captained by Hardik Pandya, and it will provide another chance for the Indian team management to identify players who are inclined to make the T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November. Rahul Tewatia, on the other hand, was absent from the team.
With a few remarkable runs for IPL 2022 champions Gujarat Titans, Tewatia earned a reputation as a terrific finisher.
In IPL 2022, Tewatia has scored 217 runs in 16 innings, with a top of 43 not out, an average of 31.43, and a 147.26 strike rate. For a player who has always been seen as a minor player, he has performed admirably in each of these matches, despite having very little left to play with.
‘He had won matches, which looked lost’: Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar, the former leader of the Indian cricket team, believed he should’ve been part of the Indian side that visited Ireland.
“Ice-man Rahul Tewatia.” If the position is so precarious, you might consider adding another member. Take an extra member instead of 15, because it is difficult to part with someone who has regularly performed well. He was fantastic. He had won bouts that appeared to be lost. He went in and banged the ball around with great intelligence and dexterity,” Sunil Gavaskar said during the fifth T20I between India and South Africa on Sunday, which was called off due to rain.
“If you have someone with that attitude, you could add a 16th man and send him to Ireland. Just acknowledging what he is done. Simply conveying the idea that “you are on the edge; just work a little harder.”
Team India will play two T20Is on June 26th and 28th in Dublin.
