BCCI Should Consult The Indian Government Before Sending The Team To South Africa Where A New COVID-19 Variant Has Emerged – Anurag Thakur

The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur has said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should consult the Indian government before sending the team to South Africa for a long tour where a new variant of the COVID-19 virus has emerged.

Team India are set to travel to South Africa for a nearly seven-week assignment which will begin on December 17. During the tour India will play three Test games, three One Day Internationals and four T20 Internationals across four venues –Johannesburg, Centurion, Paarl, and Cape Town.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that the new COVID-19 variant has been found in South Africa and cases are on the rise in the northern part of the country.

Anurag Thakur also said that it is not right to send the Indian team for the South Africa tour considering the rise in Covid-19 cases in the country. Speaking to ANI Thakur asserted:

Not only BCCI, but every board should also consult the Indian government before sending the team to a country where a new COVID-19 variant has emerged. It is not right to send the team to a country where there is a threat, if BCCI consults us we will deliberate on that.”

Talking about the new variant of the Covid-19, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has named the new variant B.1.1.529, as ‘Omicron’.

The recently discovered variant of coronavirus B.1.1.529 is of concern. It has more mutations than science knows about other alarming variants. The WHO has assessed this new variant as worrisome,” the official statement said.
