Former Indian cricketer and selector Sarandeep Singh has expressed surprise at the appointment of pacer Jasprit Bumrah as the new vice-captain of the Indian team for the upcoming 3-match One Day Internationals (ODI) series against South Africa.
Rohit Sharma was set to lead the Indian team in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, however, he suffered an injury and was ruled out of the series. So the BCCI selectors appointed KL Rahul as the new skipper and Bumrah as his deputy for the South Africa ODIs.

Speaking to ANI, Sarandeep said that he has full faith in KL Rahul the skipper but Bumrah being Rahul’s deputy is surprising. He explained:
“KL Rahul will lead Team India in the blue jersey. I have full faith in KL Rahul but Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain is surprising to me because a fast bowler names as vice-captain is quite different as he field on the boundary and it’s tough for him to come from the boundary and take part in meetings on the ground after every ball or over.”
Virat Kohli And Selectors Issue Has To Be Resolved By The Board At The Earliest – Sarandeep Singh
Virat Kohli stepped down from T20I captaincy following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 and he was removed from the ODI captaincy as well because the selectors didn’t want to have two white-ball captains in the team. Meanwhile, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had said that they requested Kohli not to quit the T20I captaincy but he didn’t agree.
However, Kohli contradicted Ganguly’s statement in an explosive press conference before the South Africa departure and said that he wasn’t told to reconsider his decision and it was received very well by the BCCI.
Now, The current Chairman of Selectors Chetan Sharma in a press conference has said that all the selectors requested Kohli to continue as a skipper for the sake of Indian cricket as they thought that Kohli’s captaincy quitting announcement will affect India’s T20 World Cup 2021 campaign.
Meanwhile, Sarandeep has opined that the matter between the BCCI and Kohli should be resolved as soon as possible.
“Virat Kohli and selectors issue has to be resolved by the board at the earliest as it is going on for too long now and this is high time in my opinion to close the matter.” said former India selector Sarandeep Singh to ANI.
