IND v SA: Team India Avoids Any Formal Charges Against Them For The DRS Outburst During Cape Town Test

No formal charges were filed against the Indian team for the outburst on air after South Africa captain Dean Elgar survived an LBW dismissal after opting for a DRS review. Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and KL Rahul were heard taking digs at the broadcasters via stump mic, but no formal charge has been filed against any player.

The incident happened in the final session of the third day’s play, Elgar was adjudged lbw on the field to R Ashwin. Elgar reviewed it, however, and the projection from Hawkeye showed Ashwin’s delivery going over the stumps, leading to the out decision on-field to be overturned.

This led to several Indian players raging with Kohli saying “Focus on your team while they shine the ball. Not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time.” And Ashwin seemed to be addressing the broadcasters directly when he said, “You should find better ways to win, SuperSport.”

ESPNCricinfo reported that the ICC’s match officials had a word with the Indian team management cautioning them about their conduct about the DRS outburst which saw Virat Kohli and co. getting aggravated after the DRS review led to the third umpire overturning the on-field umpire’s decision of out.

No official code of conduct was levied against Indian team members. However, their behavior was criticized by both former Indian players and the international cricket fraternity as well, with Virat Kohli copping most of the criticism for being the captain of the team.

The Indian captain declined to provide any comment on the issue in his post-match press conference after the third Test. He said that the team didn’t get carried away by addressing the broadcasters directly via stump mic.

“We understood what happened on the field, and people on the outside don’t know exact details of what goes on in the field, so for me to try and justify what we did on the field and say we got carried away is wrong. If we had gotten charged up and picked up three wickets there, that would have probably been the moment that changed the game,” Kohli said.

India lost the third Test match by 7 wickets and as a result lost a golden chance to win a maiden Test series in South Africa, losing the series 1-2.
