Prasidh Krishna

The Karnataka pacer Prasidh Krishna is included in the squad along with names like Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj in the bowling line-up. Krishna has played three ODIs for India so far.

It is difficult to see how Krishna will be chosen ahead of Bumrah, Bhuvi and Chahar in the bowling attack given that they are more experienced than him and certainly more potent. It is very understandable that he was included in the squad as a backup in case of any injury to the regular bowlers. Given the talent that the current Indian bowling group has, this might well be his last ODI series in India colours.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin was included in the ODI squad for the first time since 2017. However, his inclusion seems more like a tactical move more than a long-term investment. With Ravindra Jadeja injured and ruled out of the series, India needed an experienced spinner to replace him and that is what made the selectors think about Ashwin. Had Jadeja been fit, Ashwin would not have found a place in the XI.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Gaikwad despite his stellar record in recent domestic cricket and in the IPL might find it difficult to feature in the playing XI. in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan is most likely to open with KL Rahul. Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Rishabh Pant is likely to be the top seven in the playing XI. Even if Gaikwad manages to get a game in this series, it is hard to see how he will get a game when Rohit Sharma comes back into the XI.
