Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur has said that he will be “more than happy” to contribute to the team’s cause in South Africa Test series.

Speaking to the BCCI in a video interview, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin jokingly said that India played well in the previous South Africa tour but lost the series because they were not having someone like Shardul Thakur who ‘hook-pulls’ to take on the short-balls and he wanted Shardul to complete the trilogy of those hook shots in South Africa tour.

Notably, Shardul played amazing innings with the bat for India in Brisbane Test and London Test and he had played amazing hook shots against express pacers like Pat Cummins and Ollie Robinson.

Ravichandran Ashwin speaking to the BCCI jokingly said:

The tours in South Africa have always been competitive. We played well, but we lost the series 2-1. We were lacking that a person who could ‘hook-pull’. A person who can dismiss the short ball out of the vicinity. You did it in England, you did it in Australia. It’s time you did it in South Africa.”

Replying to it, all-rounder Shardul said that he hoping he can play the same knock in South Africa too. He said:

Yeah, I am looking forward to it. I hope it comes in South Africa too. Two overseas tours have been successful for us, as a team. To contribute in South African conditions, I would be more than happy.”

Shardul has become one of the key players of the Indian Test team in overseas games. He averages 38 with the bat from 4 Tests and has bagged 14 wickets. The 30-year-old said that he plans his game but confidence plays the most crucial role when he enters the ground. He said:

Like everyone, I do like to plan my game, in terms of bowling and batting. I do see the videos of (opposition) batsmen. But when I enter the ground, everything is about confidence and self-belief for me.

For example, when you’re playing white-ball cricket, you think of a yorker. To bowl that yorker, I go in with full confidence. I always play to win. That’s one thing that stands out for me. I like players who want to win matches for their team,” he added
