IND vs ZIM: Shubman Gill Is Being Groomed As An Opener For ODI World Cup – Deep Dasgupta

Former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta reckoned Shubman Gill is being groomed as an opener for India in next year’s 50-over World Cup at home.
Gill, who opened the innings alongside Shikhar Dhawan in West Indies ODIs, finished the series with the most runs between the two teams – 205 runs at an average of 102.50. He was struck on 98 and missed his maiden ODI hundred in the final game as rain showers cut short India’s innings.
KL Rahul’s return to the side could potentially deny Gill another opportunity from opening unless the skipper decides to bat in the middle order.
Shubman Gill is being groomed as an opener for ODI World Cup: Deep Dasgupta
Dasgupta believes that Rahul should open the innings in a bid to get in the groove ahead of Asia Cup 2022. However, the former Indian player said India will groom Gill as an opening option for the marquee event in ODI cricket.
“I agree it is difficult after you have had such a good series. But currently, the aim would be to prepare Rahul for the Asia Cup T20’s opening slot. He needs to get a lot of batting time and that’s a priority. I think it will be a short-term arrangement as Shubman I feel is being groomed as an opener for the ODI World Cup,” Dasgupta told news agency PTI.
Shubman Gill should bat at No.3 for Zimbabwe series: Devang Gandhi
Former Indian national selector and Test opener Devang Gandhi shared similar views on Shubman Gill being groomed and suggested him to bat at No.3 against Zimbabwe.
“I think Shubman is being groomed in the right way by the Indian team management. While he has done exceedingly well in the Caribbean ODIs, what I can gage from this team’s philosophy is to prepare players for multiple slots. Hence, I feel for this particular series, Shubman might have to come in at No. 3,” Gandhi said.
The first ODI match between Zimbabwe and India will be played on August 18 at the Harare Sports Club.
