Shubman Gill scored a career-best 84 as Gujarat Titans finished on 171/6 in match 10 of IPL 2022 at the MCA stadium in Pune. After getting out for a duck in the first game, Gill got back into form scoring more than half of his team’s runs in the end. He hit six fours and four sixes in his innings scoring an s strike rate of over 180.
Shubman Gill added 65 runs with his skipper Hardik Pandya and in his quest to get to the three-figure mark lost his wicket in the process. Gill hit some beautiful shots but was out just when his team needed him to continue with him set but he perished in the 18th over of Gujarat’s innings. Wasim Jaffer in a discussion with ESPN Cricinfo said that Shubman Gill can play all three formats for India but needs to work on his power game in the white-ball format.
“Anything that was pitched upto him he took the option to go for the big shot. I think he has got in him to play all three formats for India. He needs to improve his power game a little bit but is someone who can play all three formats for India. Very happy to see him do well” said Jaffer.
The former Indian cricketer further said he needs to score at least 500-600 runs and strengthen his case to make a return to India’s white-ball side.
“I think this IPL holds a lot more importance for him because he is not in the white-ball frame in selectors’ radar at the moment and if he scores 500-600 runs it will bring him into the contention” Jaffer added.
The Gujarat Titans opener spoke about his innings in the mid-innings break. He spoke about how he went on with his innings and made the most of his opportunity.
Happy To See Shubman Gill Do Well: Wasim Jaffer
“It felt good. It felt good to contribute runs for myself and the team. I didn’t realise that (about his low dot ball percentage) but that was the plan. To keep rotating the strike and take the singles whenever possible. I think the wicket was pretty good. Was holding a bit in the start but as the game went on, I thought it settled down. I feel anywhere between 165-180 is a good score on this wicket, so hopefully we will be able to defend it” said Gill.
