Each franchise might have strenuously thought about jotting down their best options in each area with the preferable back-ups to each role.

The next edition of IPL will have lots to offer on the table as teams will have a new set of players even though some of them have roped in their key players by shelving exponentially from their purse. The captains will have the daunting task of fielding their best playing XI with suitable combinations.

Let us have a look at the probable captains of all 10 teams in the IPL 2022 season.

IPL 2022 Auction- Probable Captains Of All 10 Teams After The Mega Auction

1) MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings)

The CSK talisman is the heartbeat of the Yellow Army and their fans might forget to ‘Whistle Podu’ without their iconic captain.

Dhoni is the only player in the history of the tournament to play as a captain in more than 200 matches. He was a palpable retainer of the franchise but as their second choice as all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was listed in the bracket of INR 16 crores.

It will be unforeseeable to fathom how long the former Indian skipper will stay with the franchise in the high-profile event but as long he does, there is no alternative to CSK’s captaincy role.

Dhoni has led CSK to four titles with the recent one coming last year after triumphing against KKR by 27 runs in the final. CSK also won the tournament in the 2010, 2011 & 2018 seasons.

Apart from CSK, Dhoni was also the captain of the now-defunct franchise Rising Pune Super Giant in IPL 2016.

3) Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

The New Zealand skipper is an indisputable candidate to lead the Orange Army in IPL 2022 as he was retained along with two uncapped Indian players ahead of the mega auction.

Williamson led SRH for the first time in 2018 after the IPL Governing Council had banned Australia’s David Warner from participating in the league in the aftermath of the sandpaper gate incident.

Williamson took the franchise to the final of IPL 2018 only to lose to MS Dhoni’s CSK by eight wickets.

In IPL 2020, SRH reappointed Warner as the captain only to sack him in IPL 2021 as Williamson was reinstated to the leadership role.

Williamson has stood SRH’s skipper in 33 IPL matches having won 16 and lost as many matches.

With 2583 runs from 95 innings, Samson is the second-highest run-scorer of Rajasthan Royals after former skipper Ajinkya Rahane (3098).

Samson was retained by Royals for INR 14 crore along with Jos Buttler (10 crores) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (4 crores).

5) Hardik Pandya (Gujarat Titans)

Hardik Pandya was named captain of the new franchise to synchronise its identity of having a local player as the face of the team.

The Indian all-rounder scored 1476 runs from 85 innings and claimed 42 scalps and also won four titles in his long stint with the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians.

This will be an ultimate challenge for the Baroda player to test his leadership skills and take his career to the next level.

6) KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants)

After leading Punjab Kings for two seasons, the Karnataka player is ready for a new challenge of leading the Sanjiv Goenka owned team in IPL 2022.

Just after IPL 2021, reports had already emerged that Rahul will be leaving Punjab to join one of the two new IPL teams. Rahul led Punjab in 27 matches, won 11 and lost 14 of them.

Rahul will have the likes of Rashid Khan, Quinton de Kock, Jason Holder and Avesh Khan in his team to go with their full strength in their first season.

7) Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals)

Pant was named captain of the Delhi franchise after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out ahead of the IPL 2021 owing to a shoulder injury.

Pant continued to lead the team even after Iyer was back in the second leg of the tournament in UAE.

Under Pant, Capitals topped the charts of IPL 2021 with 20 points but lost the fixtures in the knockout stage.

Pant was retained along with the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje.

8) Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Iyer is the reason behind Delhi Capitals resurgence after he took over the captaincy duties from Gautam Gambhir in IPL 2018.

In IPL 2019, the Delhi franchise qualified for the playoffs after a hiatus of seven years and the next year they made their maiden appearance in a final, where they lost to Mumbai Indians.

Iyer can not only give any team the option of a middle-order batter but also could become a potential candidate for the leadership role.

After KKR released both Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik ahead of the auction, Iyer can fill the shoes of a leader of their side.

9) Mayank Agarwal (Punjab Kings)

After KL Rahul’s departure from the franchise, all eyes have been on his Karnataka teammate Mayank Agarwal to don the captain’s armband.

In fact, last season Mayank led Punjab Kings against Delhi Capitals when Rahul was diagnosed with acute appendicitis. If Mayank gets the opportunity to captain Punjab, then he will have to overcome the shackles of not qualifying in the playoffs since 2014.

10) Glenn Maxwell (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Maxwell could be one of the front-runners to take the captaincy reins of the Bangalore team after Virat Kohli stepped down from the role at the conclusion of IPL 2021.
