Punjab Kings head into the IPL 2022 mega auction with the biggest available purse. The franchise retained Mayank Agarwal (Rs 12 crore) and Arshdeep Singh (Rs 4 crore) and have 72 crores remaining in the balance in which to shop players. Punjab Kings and mega auctions have not been the best of friends in the past.

This is reportedly the last mega auction, thus the franchise needs to be sensible about buying players at the mega auction. They also need a skipper to lead the aide in the upcoming seasons. Finding a seasoned IPL captain might be a task for the franchise. Here is a probable list of players that Punjab Kings might fancy buying at the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Mayank Agarwal will open the innings and Shikhar Dhawan might be the best fit as his partner given that he is an Indian player and a teammate of Mayank in the Indian dressing room. Dhawan’s experience will be invaluable for the franchise who are still looking for their first IPL title. Alex Hales and Glenn Phillips are overseas T20 freelancers and can fit the bill as well. Dhawan gives the franchise a potential captaincy candidate as well.

Middle-Order- Eoin Morgan, Nicholas Pooran, Shahrukh Khan, Shimron Hetmyer

All four are attacking options to bat in the middle-order. Shahrukh played for the franchise in IPL 2021 and played a few handy cameos. Pooran too was a part of the franchise till IPL 2021. Shimron Hetmyer can be a good addition given that he is young and someone who can be groomed to be a future captain. Morgan gives the franchise another captaincy choice. He took KKR to the finals of IPL 2021. How much batting form will he bring into the side will always remain a question.

All-Rounders- Jimmy Neesham, Jason Holder, Mitchell Marsh

This is probably the season to go big for Punjab Kings with 72 crores in the bank. The above-mentioned players are seasoned all-rounders and can be good addition to any team in the format. Marsh and Holder especially have been consistent with bat and ball in recent times.

Spinners-Ravichandran Ashwin, Piyush Chawla

Ashwin has led Punjab in IPL 2018 and 2019. The Indian off-spinner gives the side another potential captaincy candidate. Piyush Chawla is well past his prime but can be a good option in this format. Important, they are Indian spinners and for a team like Punjab Kings can do the job.

Pacers- Tymal Mills, Josh Hazlewood

Punjab has roped in pacers at a costly price in the past and has hardly used them with purpose. The IPL 2022 mega auction gives them yet another chance to bag quality pacers with plenty of options available. Among the Indian bowlers, they have a few options to choose from. It is in choosing the overseas pacers that they have mistakes in the past.

Tymal Mills and Josh Hazlewood can be good options given that they are two different types of pacers. While Hazlewood hits the deck hard, Mills uses his change-ups precisely. If they remain injury-free, they can be consistent picks in the playing XI.
