IPL 2022 Auction: Rating The 5 Best Retained Openers

IPL 2022 is going to be a 10-team event, with the addition of two new teams Lucknow and Ahmedabad. IPL 2022 auction is scheduled to take place next month in February when 10 franchises will engage in bidding wars to pick their favourite players. Ahead of IPL 2022, the old 8 franchises were allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players in their squad.

The 8 teams retained a total of 27 players in their squad. While 4 teams retained 4 players, the other 4 teams only went ahead with 3 or fewer retentions. There are many openers who gave fabulous performances in the last season. However, only a few of them made it to the retention list of their respective team. 5. Rohit Sharma-7.0

Rohit Sharma might be one of the most powerful openers in international cricket but when it comes to IPL, he is not equally mighty. In IPL 2021, he scored 381 runs in 13 games at an average of 29.30 as his team failed to qualify for playoffs. The right-handed batsman managed to hit just 1 fifty. The MI skipper has been retained by the team for Rs. 16 crore. He gets a rating of 7.0 out of 10.

4. Prithvi Shaw-7.5

Prithvi Shaw was part of Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021 and the franchise has retained him for IPL 2022 as well. The right-handed batsman gave a fabulous show last season. Smashing 479 runs in 15 matches at an average of 31.93, Shaw was the 7th top run-getter in the tournament. He also slammed 4 fifties and owned an impressive strike rate of 159+. He gets a rating of 7.5 in this list.

3. Sanju Samson- 8.0

Sanju Samson was Rajashthan Royals’ skipper last season. With a marvellous century in the opening game and 2 more half-centuries later, the right-handed batsman mustered 484 runs in IPL 2021. With an average of 40.33 in 14 games, he was also the 6th highest run-getter in the tournament, batting at a strike rate of 136+. Samson gets a rating of 8.0.

2. Venkatesh Iyer- 8.5

Venkatesh Iyer gets a rating of 8.5 in this list. Iyer was the surprise package in the last season. The KKR player only played in the UAE leg but impressed everyone with his hard-hitting batting style. The left-handed batsman slammed 370 runs in 10 matches at an average of 41.11.

He also slammed 4 half-centuries and played a crucial role to take his team to the final. From his last auction price of just 20 lakh, Iyer has managed to garner a deal of Rs. 8 crore from Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2022.

1. Ruturaj Gaikwad- 9.0

Ruturaj Gaikwad tops this list with a rating of 9.0. Gaikwad was one of the biggest reasons for CSK’s success in IPL 2021. The right-handed batsman won the orange cap after smashing most runs in the tournament. The 24-year-old mustered 635 runs in the season at an average of 45.35. He also slammed 4 half-centuries and 1 century during the tournament, while also smashing most number of 64 boundaries.
