The IPL 2022 is gearing up for a big surprise as we get closer to the stages of finding out the players who will be retained by each franchise ahead of the mega auction. Chennai Super Kings finished as the winners of IPL 2021 and it might also be the last eight-team IPL edition.
Each of the eight-team has been allowed to retain four players and it will take a big hit in their purse as well ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The two new teams will get to retain 3 players after the other teams retain their players and it is time to look at team-wise 2 big players every team might release.
IPL 2022 Auction: Team Wise 2 Big Players Every Team Might Release
Sunrisers Hyderabad:
David Warner:
David Warner has been one of the greats of the IPL with some staggering numbers to his game. However, he did struggle a bit in the previous IPL season at the top of the order and was sacked from captaincy in the midway as well. With Rashid Khan and Kane Williamson being top overseas contenders to be retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad, David Warner is unlikely to be retained.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar:
Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn’t been the same bowler he was three years ago and has started leaking a lot of runs in the powerplay as well as in the death overs. He has had very less impact on the Sunrisers Hyderabad this season and missed out on a few games as well. He is highly unlikely to be retained by the Sunrsers Hyderabad franchise.
Rajasthan Royals:
Ben Stokes:
Ben Stokes did not take part after the first two games of the IPL 2021 suffering a finger injury and Rajasthan Royals might have a big conundrum while retaining their overseas players. They have the options of Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer who are expected to be the first choice picks for retention and Stokes might not be able to feature in the retention list.
Chris Morris:
Chris Morris was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL Auction 2021 as the most expensive player ever bought in IPL history. He was brilliant in the first phase of IPL 2021 picking up a lot of wickets and also won games for the franchise down the order. Morris did not have the best of outings in the second phase of IPL 2021 and is unlikely to be retained by the franchise.
Punjab Kings:
Mayank Agarwal:
Mayank Agarwal turned out to be one of the consistent run-scorers for Punjab Kings in the last two IPL seasons and he finished with 441 runs in IPL 2021 at an average of 40.09. The right-hander despite his good outings is likely to go into the pool as he can be bought back by the franchise for less price than the retaining price.
Chris Gayle:
Chris Gayle has not been at his best in recent times for his franchise in IPL 2021 as well as for the West Indies side in the T20 World cup 2021. The veteran left-hander is one of the consistent IPL performers over the years and can hit the big sixes at will. However, he is expected to be released by the franchise with him not performing up to the standards.
Mumbai Indians:
Suryakumar Yadav:
Mumbai Indians will already be looking to retain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah in the lineup while they will opt for another overseas option in Kieron Pollard. With the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Rahul Chahar all doing well, Suryakumar might be the one to miss out on the retention list for Mumbai Indians despite being an
Trent Boult:
Trent Boult might be one of the names discussed for retaining ahead of the mega auction as New Zealand left-arm seamer from the Mumbai Indians. However, with Pollard’s experience in the team, it is highly unlikely for Mumbai Indians to retain Trent Boult despite him forming an excellent bowling partnership alongside Jasprit Bumrah.
Royal Challengers Bangalore:
Devdutt Padikkal:
With Royal Challengers Bangalore having the likes of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, or AB De Villiers in the side, Devdutt Padikkal might be the one to miss out on the retention list. The elegant left-hander brought up his maiden IPL century this season however, he did not have the best of times in the UAE phase of IPL 2021.
Yuzvendra Chahal:
Yuzvendra Chahal after all the criticism he faced in the first phase of IPL 2021 turned up in the best way possible to end up with a lot of wickets in the UAE phase. The leg spinner was dropped from the T20 World cup 2021 Indian squad however, he managed to get it right in the second phase of IPL 2021. RCB could be retaining Mohammad Siraj or Harshal Patel ahead of Chahal.
Delhi Capitals:
Shikhar Dhawan:
Shikhar Dhawan has been in the form of his life in the last two IPL seasons and has looked a lot more effective in T20 cricket at the moment. He has worked on his shot-making skills and ended up as the highest run-scorer for Delhi Capitals in both their previous IPL seasons. However, with the likes of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and Prithvi Shaw in the rankings, Dhawan might not be retained considering his age.
Marcus Stoinis:
The Delhi Capitals’ all-rounder Marcus Stoinis might not be able to retain their all-rounder Marcus Stoinis despite him being one of the standout performers for the side in the last two IPL seasons. The Australian will have to battle it out in the retention list with Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje and both the seamers have done exceedingly well to make them the priority.
Kolkata Knight Riders:
Dinesh Karthik:
Dinesh Karthik is one of the best finishers in the Indian circuit going around and the right-hander can certainly be very effective at the back end of the innings. With his captaincy duties, he will be a hot pick in the auction and is unlikely to be retained by the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise as well. The wicket-keeper batsman has played for a number of IPL teams and will attract the franchises if he gets into the auction.
Pat Cummins:
Pat Cummins was brought for a hefty price in the IPL auction last year and he did not have the best of IPL seasons last year. He wasn’t at his best but did show some signs of returning back to form in the IPL 2021 first phase. However, with Kolkata Knight Riders having a lot of star overseas players in Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Lockie Ferguson, it will be tough to retain Pat Cummins.
Chennai Super Kings:
Suresh Raina:
Suresh Raina has been popularly called the Mr IPL for his contributions to the Chennai Super Kings from the inaugural season. The left-hander came into the side after missing out one year and he had very less impact for the side in the middle order. He is unlikely to be retained by the CSK side who have a lot of match-winners and will definitely go into the auction pool.
Sam Curran:
Sam Curran is another exciting prospect who may have to come to the auction as CSK have a lot of overseas players who could be retained. The most favoured candidate to be retained will be Faf Du Plessis who had an excellent season while Dwayne Bravo remains an option too. Sam Curran could attract huge bids in the auction if he is released.
