Overall, the squad looks very balance and with MS Dhoni still at the helm, they start as one of the favourites to win the tournament. In between all this, they did not opt to get back Suresh Raina back into their team which became one of the talking points of the mega auction.
Chennai Super Kings have a total of seven overseas players in their squad. They retained Moeen Ali and added the likes of bought back Chris Jordan and Mitchell Santner into their squad. They added a good death bowling option Chris Jordan, a fast bower in Adam Milne and two others in Devon Conway and Dwayne Pretorious.

Devon Conway
Conway can replace Faf Du Plessis at the top of the order for Chennai Super Kings. He is a big-hitter in T20 cricket and can suit himself according to the requirements of the side. He will open alongside Robin Uthappa or Ruturaj Gaikwad which also means that the left-right combination will be taken care of. With enough depth in the CSK batting order, Conway can be a free-stroking opener at the top-order for CSK.

Moeen Ali
Dwayne Bravo

CSK have two death bowling options in Dwayne Bravo and Chris Jordan and they might use both of them in their playing XI. They will obviously prefer Bravo over Jordan if the need arises. Bravo with his invaluable experience has been a matchwinner for CSK and the franchise has kept immense trust in the player as well. CSK buying Bravo is the auction is an evident example of that trust over the years.
Chris Jordan

The addition of Chris Jordan adds a bit of flesh to their death bowling. This also allows the franchisee to use Deepak Chahar inside the powerplay and leave the death overs to the two specialists in Bravo and Jordan. Jordan can hit big shots as well if and when needed which makes him a good addition to the Chennai Super Kings playing XI.
