Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has lauded MS Dhoni as the best captain the Indian Premier League (IPL) has ever seen after the mercurial Chennai Super Kings (CSK) leader stepped down from the captaincy position ahead of the IPL 2022 edition and handed over the baton to Ravindra Jadeja.
The 41-year-old Dhoni’s decision to relinquish the captaincy just days before the IPL 2022 edition sent everyone in shock, as CSK are the defending champions having won the IPL 2021 edition, which was the fourth title win for MS Dhoni and co.
The veteran was expected to continue as captain, especially after being retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The World Cup-winning captain will play as a wicket-keeper batter for the first time since IPL 2016, where he played under the leadership of Steve Smith.
I Expect MS Dhoni To Step In During Crunch Situations: Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh said that he was surprised to see MS Dhoni quitting the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) just days before the IPL 2022 was to begin. However, he still lauded the 41-year-old as the best captain he had seen in the history of the Indian Premier League tournament.
MS Dhoni has played as a player in the Indian Premier League only once in IPL 2017 when the RPSG group replaced him with Steve Smith as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiants. And Harbhajan Singh feels that though Jadeja is captain, Dhoni will be there to help him out in a difficult situation.
Harbhajan Singh said in an exclusive chat with Sportskeeda: “I did not expect Dhoni to relinquish the captaincy right before the season. I thought he would use this season to groom someone. I don’t think there has been a better captain than him in the IPL. This decision must have been taken after a lot of thought. Even though Jadeja is the captain, I expect Dhoni to step in during crunch situations in trademark fashion.”
Ravindra Jadeja will feature as the captain of the first team when CSK takes the field to face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the opening contest of IPL 2022.
