Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has offered a one-of-a-kind solution to the Shreyas Iyer-led side ahead of the season’s start, calling it a big call.
One of the major concerns for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the start of the 15th season of the Indian Premier League is their death-over bowling, with Andre Russell serving as their sole specialist option.
Regrettably, one of their key death-over pacers, Lockie Ferguson, was released by KKR before the mega auction, leaving KKR with Russell like a specialist and Pat Cummins and Sunil Narine as a backup.
Irfan recommended on Star Sports ‘Game Plan’ that KKR consider giving mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy some few overs during that phase, together with Russell, if fit, Shivam Mavi, and Umesh Yadav.
“The concern regarding KKR is their death bowling, and I assume they can solve their riddle by putting a couple of overs from Varun Chakravarthy in the death overs.” It’s a big call even though you have Sunil Narine, who really can bowl well after the powerplay, in the middle overs, and probably keep two overs for Varun, but also keep two overs for him in the death.
“I believe things will be much easier after that.” Umesh Yadav and Shivam Mavi each can bowl one over. If Andre Russell is fit, he might be able to bowl two overs, and even though if you can find a spot for Varun to bowl at the death, it will look far better than it does now,” he said.
Irfan Pathan thinks it’ll be exciting to see Shreyas Iyer as KKR Captain:
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) named middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer as their captain for the IPL 2022 season. The franchise signed the right-handed batter for 12.25 crore at the recent mega auction.
So far, Iyer has appeared in 87 IPL matches, scoring 2375 runs at an average of 31.67 and striking at 123.96. He also has a strong captaincy record, having led the Delhi Capitals in 41 matches, winning 23 of them.
