Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli said that he can still be the leader of the team and take them to success in the IPL 2022. After leading RCB in 140 IPL matches in nearly 10 seasons, Kohli stepped down from the captaincy role at the end of the last season.

You can still be a leader within the team: Virat Kohli

Kohli said that regardless of him being the captain of the team, the motive for him as a player will be to contribute to them and is happy to see the transition happening during his playing days.

“You can still be a leader within the team, drive the team forward towards success and winning trophies and titles, but I take a lot of pride in contributing for the team,” Kohli said in an interview posted on RCB’s official website.

“That for me is a very exciting space to be in because you are an individual who’s part of a team, whether you’re a captain or not, you’re still an individual who’s part of the team.

“A lot of people see transitions happen when they are away from the system. I’m lucky enough to see it happen in front of my eyes, while I’m still part of the larger picture,” he added.

I certainly feel that joy of purely coming here and hitting the ball again: Virat Kohli

Kohli explained that he is enjoying his training sessions after the responsibility of the captaincy was unburdened from his shoulders.

“Not that you don’t focus on it, but somewhere when you have other responsibilities, that tends to kind of take a back seat, and over a period of time when you do it over and over again, and your mind is only running in one direction, then you can tend to lose that joy to come and practice,” he said.

“For me, that’s always been the essence of playing cricket and something that I’ve always wanted for it to be alive within me. And I certainly feel that joy of purely coming here and hitting the ball again,” he added.

RCB will kick off their IPL 2022 campaign on Sunday when they face Mayank Agarwal-led Punjab Kings at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
