Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Tom Moody has said that the injury to young spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar had a major impact on the bowling of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the early phase of the match against Chennai Super Kings at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Sunday, May 1, where SRH faced a 13-run defeat.

Young spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar has struggled a lot with injuries recently as in the early phase of the Indian Premier League 2022 he split his webbing on his bowling hand and against Chennai Super Kings he re-injured his bowling hand while fielding, which led to him not being able to bowl even single over.

Skipper Kane Williamson was in major trouble after the all-rounder’s injury and he had to use Aiden Markram and Shashank Singh to complete Sundar’s quota.

Meanwhile, in the post-match presentation, Tom Moody said that Sundar is extremely unfortunate and unlucky that he got a knock on his bowling hand.

Unfortunate for him, he got a knock on the same hand where he split his webbing and had stitches. It had healed completely, but he re-injured that area. It’s not to the point where he needs a re-stitch, but it wasn’t in a state where he could bowl. So, it’s incredibly unlucky for him and his injury impacted us in the early phase of our bowling given that he plays such a critical role for us in the first 10 overs,” Moody said in the post-match press conference.

Notably, other than Sundar, SRH also suffered a blow after pacer T Natarajan was forced to go off the field due to an injury after bowling a single over. However, the pacer came back to the field and in the death overs, he bagged 2 wickets.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s head coach said that the injuries of two very important players made it difficult for captain Kane Williamson to manage the things.

At the end of the day when you lose one of your important bowlers, whether it’s a spinner or not, it is a massive blow to the side. It wasn’t only that situation for us as we also had Natarajan off the field with an injury that was taking some time before he could come back on,” he stated.

“So basically, we had 7 overs that hadn’t been bowled by frontline bowlers up to the 14th to 15th over. So, it made it very difficult for Kane to manage the situation out in the middle and hence, we chased a total that was 20-30 runs more than it should have been,” Moody added.
