Former Australia fast bowler, Brett Lee was “shocked” not to see David Warner in the eleven which was announced by the new Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper, Kane Williamson, on Sunday against the Rajasthan Royals.
On Saturday, Warner was stripped off from captaincy after the Sunrisers managed just a solitary win in 6 games. Kane Williamson, who led them to the final in 2018, was appointed the replacement for the rest of the season.
David Warner, who led Sunrisers to its only IPL title so far in 2016, was then also dropped from the line-up making way for Mohammad Nabi as the all-rounder.
Brett Lee expressed his surprise at the Aussie opener being dropped altogether from the side acknowledging that Warner has been a bit disappointing with the bat – the left-hander has scored 193 runs in 6 innings at a strike rate of 110.29.
“I’m actually shocked that David Warner was not included in the XI. I know he hasn’t been playing his best form of cricket in terms of his strike rate this season but he’s always been there and there about with the Orange Cap party,” Brett Lee said while speaking with Star Sports.
He would not be happy but all he can do now is be a good team player: Brett Lee
The 44-year-old cricketer-turned-commentator emphasized his compatriot’s contribution to SRH with the bat – Warner is the leading overseas run-scorer in the IPL history and is a 3-time orange cap winner.
“He has scored runs throughout the IPL. Tell you what, he’s not happy. He would not be happy but all he can do now is be a good team player and support his team and hopefully for the Sunrisers, they can find some momentum,” the former speedster stated.
The change of captaincy didn’t change SRH’s fortunes, if anything it seems to get only worse. They remain at the bottom of the table with 6 losses in 7 outings, and will next meet Mumbai Indians on Tuesday.
