Former Indian player Sanjay Manjrekar chose his 3 potential successors to Virat Kohli as the future Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain. Kohli had announced prior to the start of the second leg of IPL 2021 that he would be stepping down as the skipper after this season.

Manjrekar reckoned that former Proteas skipper AB de Villiers wouldn’t be a wise choice considering the batsman doesn’t have many more years of play left in him. Therefore, he chose to go with two Mumbai Indians players – Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard.

Pollard has previously captained MI in the absence of Rohit Sharma. He also has experience having led West Indies in the shortest format quite a few times. He along with Suryakumar and Aussie opener, David Warner are the best candidates, as per Manjrekar.

How many years could you get out of AB de Villiers as the captain? So I would like to have someone who has at least three years to offer. Pollard is one guy who has the leadership qualities. Suryakumar Yadav and David Warner are my three contenders,” he said in a conversation with ESPNcricinfo.

Dale Steyn Backs Sanjay Manjrekar’s opinion on De Villiers, Reckons KL Rahul should be the next captain

Former South African pacer, Dale Steyn, was in agreement with Manjrekar regarding De Villiers. Steyn believes it should be someone who’s homegrown and RCB doesn’t have to look further than current Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain, KL Rahul.

I don’t think AB de Villiers is the right way to go. I think he is a phenomenal player. But he is at the end of his career. I think he is a great leader. But if RCB are going to look at a long-term contender as captain, they should be looking within their own borders. It’s KL Rahul. I just have a feeling he is going to return back to Bangalore,” Steyn added.

Kohli had also announced that he would be stepping down as Team India’s captain in the T20I format after the conclusion of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
