Mumbai Indians (MI) gave a proper hiding to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Match No 51 here at the Sharjah Cricket Ground on Tuesday. They defeated the Rajasthan franchise by 8-wickets with as many as 70 balls to spare. The win took them to the fifth spot on the table, while also having improved their net run rate by a huge margin.

MI was set a meek target of 91 after a terrible batting display from the Sanju Samson-led side. They got off to a flier in the run chase, racing away to 56/2 in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma looked in excellent touch before the slowness of the surface got the better of him.

Suryakumar Yadav was done in Mustafizur Rahman, but not before he played a couple of wonderful shots. Having been dropped in the previous match, Ishan Kishan made a comeback at the top of the order in place of regular wicket-keeper, Quinton de Kock. He started off by playing a maiden over off Chetan Sakariya.

Kishan soon found his range and looked like his usual, confident self. After he scored a couple of boundaries off debutante, Kuldip Yadav, Kishan started bludgeoning the ball to all parts of the ground. He finished the match with a six and also reached his fifty in the process.

Earlier, RR was asked to bat first by Rohit and their openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Evin Lewis began from where they left off against CSK. The first two overs fetched 27 runs and it looked like they had just started. However, one wicket was all it took to spark a tremendous collapse.

Rajasthan failed to recover and they lost wickets at regular intervals. There was a phase in the middle overs where there were no boundaries scored. Nathan Coulter-Nile had brilliant figures of 4/14 while James Neesham took 3/12 in his four overs. The pitch at Sharjah was quite slow and low but RR’s eventual total of 90/9 was never going to challenge the defending champions.
