Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was a little disappointed by Suryakumar Yadav, who failed to bat till the end during IND vs NZ 1st T20I on Wednesday (November 19). Gautam Gambhir also wants the Indian team to be more ruthless while batting. Suryakumar Yadav played a match-winning knock of 62 runs in India vs New Zealand 1st T20I.

However, he lost his wicket in the 17th over during India’s chase of a 165-run target. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian side also faced a mini-batting collapse later, losing two more wickets in the last 3 overs. India needed 10 runs to win in the final over, and the match situation was a bit spicy. However, India managed to win the match by 5 wickets with 2 balls to spare.

You Have Got To Be More Ruthless With The Batting Unit: Gautam Gambhir

While speaking to Star Sports about the match, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir mentioned that the Indian team needs to be more ruthless while chasing targets like these and crush the opponents.

“You have got to finish off much stronger because chasing targets like these, you have got to be more ruthless with the batting unit. Professionalism is not only about scraping through or getting these runs at the second last ball.

“When you were in the position where you could absolutely crush the opponents, go out and be ruthless. That is the attitude that India need for the next 11 months and that is what will define them when they head into big tournaments against strong sides,” Gambhir said.

Suryakumar Yadav Needs To Finish Off These Games, Says Gautam Gambhir

The cricket commentator also advised Suryakumar Yadav to finish off such games with his batting. He was disappointed as the right-handed batsman could not score the winning runs in the match.

“Very disappointed. See, though I really admire him for his batting, he needs to finish off these games. It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish. It really doesn’t matter if you’ve got a 60, 70 or 80, if you can score the last run, you are the most important part in the side,” added Gautam Gambhir.

For Gambhir, Rishabh Pant finishing off the game was more important than Suryakumar’s 62 runs, which set the foundation of India’s successful chase in the match.

“Rishabh Pant finishing off this game was more important than Surya getting 62 runs because scoring that last run is the toughest run. So when he was in that position, where he could have come out 70, 80 not out and won the game, that is what maturity is about. You mature not just by scoring runs but by finishing off games in such scenarios,” Gautam Gambhir further said.

In the end, India needed 10 runs off the last 6 balls. After that, things got a bit tense as the game went to 3 runs needed off 3 balls of Daryl Mitchell’s final over. Finally, however, Rishabh Pant scored a boundary to bag the victory for India by 5 wickets. India will lock horns with New Zealand in the 2nd T20I on November 19 (Friday).
